Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 27, 2026|% Change Since:-14.00%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was predominantly positive, with strong revenue, pricing, heavy haul, safety, BCO utilization, agent-network, technology, and July performance trends. These positives were partly offset by materially higher claims and insurance costs, brokerage margin compression, elevated SG&A, negative second-quarter free cash flow, ongoing litigation uncertainty, and the decision not to provide formal third-quarter guidance.

Company Guidance

Given the highly fluid freight transportation backdrop and an evolving geopolitical and macroeconomic environment, coupled with a highly volatile litigation and claims environment, the company will be providing third quarter financial and operational commentary rather than formal guidance. Historically, pre-pandemic patterns would normally be expected to yield a sequential increase of approximately 1.5% in truck revenue per load, but an approximately 1.5% decrease in the number of loads hauled via truck, resulting in a relatively flat top line sequentially, with a de minimis variance in variable contribution margin from the second quarter to the third quarter. The number of loads hauled via truck in July 2026 was approximately 5% above July 2025 on a dispatch basis, revenue per load was approximately 26% above July 2025 on a process basis, anticipated truck revenue per load in July was outperforming normal seasonality, and anticipated July truck volumes were trending slightly ahead of normal seasonality; the year-over-year truck volume increase during the last three weeks of fiscal July ranged from +1.5% to +3.5% on a dispatch basis. July pricing was about 150 basis points better than normal, while loads per workday were 60 basis points better on June into July.

  • Revenue Growth and Strong Truck PerformanceSecond-quarter revenue increased 18% year-over-year. Truck revenue per load increased 17%, while the number of truck loads hauled increased nearly 2%. Both metrics outperformed typical pre-pandemic seasonality.
  • Record Sequential Truck Revenue per Load IncreaseTruck revenue per load increased 14.4% sequentially in the second quarter, the largest sequential increase over the past 15 years, exceeding the 13.5% increase recorded in the 2020 third quarter.
  • Heavy Haul GrowthHeavy haul revenue was approximately $164 million, up 18% year-over-year. Heavy haul volume increased 9% and revenue per load increased 8%.
  • Improving Freight Market ConditionsThe ISM Index was above 50 for all six months of 2026. Truck capacity tightened significantly during the quarter, and management said market conditions that had favored shippers since late 2022 began shifting rapidly in favor of transportation providers.
  • Strong Equipment-Level PricingRevenue per load increased 19.9% on loads hauled by unsided platform equipment and 15.8% on loads hauled by van equipment. Revenue per mile on BCO-hauls increased 10% for unsided platform equipment and 11% for van equipment year-over-year.
  • Positive Monthly Pricing MomentumRevenue per mile on unsided platform equipment increased 5% from March to April, 2% from April to May, and 6% from May to June. Van revenue per mile increased 3%, 3%, and 7% over the same monthly periods. Both equipment categories outperformed typical pre-pandemic trends in each month of the second quarter.
  • Growth in Nontruck Transportation RevenueNontruck transportation service revenue increased 6%, or $5 million, year-over-year. The increase was mostly due to a 50% increase in air revenue per load and a 16% increase in intermodal pricing.
  • Broad-Based Commodity Revenue GrowthTransportation logistics segment revenue increased 18% on a 16% increase in revenue per load and a 2% increase in volume. Consumer durables revenue rose 24% on a 23% increase in revenue per load and a 2% increase in volume. Revenue across the top five commodity categories increased approximately 20%.
  • Positive Commodity Volume TrendsYear-over-year loadings increased 2% for machinery, 8% for building products, and 31% for electrical products. Automotive equipment and parts loadings decreased 1%.
  • Diversified Customer BaseLandstar has more than 20,000 customers, and none contributed more than 8% of revenue during the 2026 first half.
  • Gross Profit and Variable Contribution GrowthSecond-quarter gross profit increased to $132.3 million from $109.3 million. Gross profit margin improved to 9.2% from 9.0%. Variable contribution increased to $199.4 million from $170.5 million, and operating income increased by approximately 20 basis points as a percentage of variable contribution.
  • Improving BCO Truck CountBCO truck count decreased by less than 1% year-over-year but increased approximately 80 basis points sequentially. Net additions of 68 trucks in the second quarter represented the strongest quarterly improvement since the first quarter of 2022, and the count increased during the first four weeks of the third fiscal quarter.
  • BCO Retention and Recruiting MomentumThe trailing 12-month BCO truck turnover rate declined from 31.4% at 2025 fiscal year-end to 28.3% at the end of the second quarter. Gross truck additions increased 4.2% sequentially, gross cancellations decreased 13.6%, and the company reported continued net additions of 49 trucks during the most recent four-week July period.
  • Higher BCO UtilizationBCO utilization increased 12% year-over-year and 8% sequentially. Year-to-date annualized BCO loadings were 101.9, approximately five loads above the previous all-time high.
  • Strong Safety PerformanceThe first-half accident frequency rate was 0.62 DOT-reportable accidents per million miles, below the last available national FMCSA average for 2021 and below Landstar's 0.67 rate in the 2025 first half.
  • Expansion of the Agent NetworkLandstar added an approximately $18 million freight broker from the Midwest, one of its largest new-agent signings in the past 15 years. Inbound interest and conversations with potential new agents accelerated following the Montgomery decision, and the company recognized 457 million-dollar agents based on 2025 results.
  • Strong Data Center and Infrastructure DemandManagement continued to see strong demand in the broader data center ecosystem, including energy, cooling, building products, and machinery. Twenty-two customers in that vertical increased their Landstar heavy haul volumes by at least 50 loads during the quarter, and management cited a strong pipeline through the remainder of 2026 and into 2027.
  • Technology and AI InvestmentLandstar is continuing to invest in technology and AI solutions. Applications have improved agent workflow, information retrieval, exception handling, and data visibility, with plans to begin deploying repeatable AI applications in agent offices starting in mid-third quarter.
  • Fleet and Equipment InvestmentThe company allocated a significant amount of capital toward refreshing its trailing equipment fleet, with particular emphasis on new van equipment.
  • Capital Returns and Dividend IncreaseLandstar returned approximately $120 million to shareholders during the first half through dividends and share repurchases, including approximately $95 million of dividends and $24 million of repurchases. The board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.44 per share, a 10% increase over the dividend declared in each of the prior five quarters.
  • Strong Balance Sheet and Insurance RenewalThe company entered the quarter with $348 million of cash and short-term investments. The auto liability insurance tower renewed effectively flat, broker liability premiums increased 3%, and the company made no meaningful adjustments to self-insured retention levels.
  • Carrier Vetting ImprovementsApproved carriers declined from more than 100,000 in the second quarter of 2022 to just over 64,000 at the end of the 2026 second quarter, a 35% reduction. Management attributed the reduction to investments in technology, information, cargo-fraud controls, and safety-related vetting.
  • Positive July TrendsOn a dispatch basis, July 2026 truck loads were approximately 5% above July 2025. On a process basis, revenue per load was approximately 26% above July 2025. Management said July truck revenue per load was outperforming normal seasonality and volumes were trending slightly ahead of normal seasonality.
  • Leadership Additions and Strategic FocusBill Clement, a transportation industry veteran with more than 30 years of leadership experience, will become Chief Commercial Officer effective August 1. Jim Applegate will become Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer to support innovation, strategic initiatives, and value creation across the network.
  • Potential Agent-Focused Growth StrategyManagement said the company has the balance sheet to support M&A but views adding more independent agents, including additional agents in the approximately $18 million range, as a particularly attractive risk-adjusted opportunity.
