Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive. Highlights significantly outweighed the limited challenges, with record collections, double-digit revenue and cash-generation growth, improved margins and ROIC, reduced leverage, strong liquidity, raised 2026 guidance, and stated confidence in continued 2027 earnings growth. The main challenges were higher legal collection expenses, slightly higher portfolio pricing, robust competition in Europe, and elevated U.S. credit stress, although management stated that collections efficiency and stable consumer payment behavior were offsetting or mitigating these factors.
Encore expects global portfolio purchases in 2026 to be in a range between $1.5 billion and $1.55 billion, global collections in 2026 to be in a range between $2.9 billion and $2.95 billion, and 2026 EPS to be in a range between $15.50 per share and $16 per share, excluding the potential positive impact of the discrete noncash tax benefit; it continues to expect interest expense in 2026 to be $295 million and its effective tax rate for the year to be in mid-20s on a percentage basis, while cash efficiency margin for the full year is expected to exceed 58% in 2026 and leverage is expected to remain within the target leverage range of 2x to 3x. In the fourth quarter, it is reasonably possible that Encore will recognize a discrete noncash tax benefit of approximately $15 million to $20 million, equivalent to a positive EPS impact of $0.65 to $0.90 for the year, and it has confidence for continued earnings growth in 2027.
- Strong Third-Quarter Financial and Operating PerformanceEncore reported global portfolio purchases of $390 million, including $310 million in the U.S.; record global collections of $754 million, up 14% year over year; average receivable portfolios of $4.69 billion, up 11%; GAAP net income of $124 million, or $5.57 per share; and leverage of 2.3x versus 2.5x a year ago.
- Record Collections and Increased Cash GenerationGlobal collections reached a record $754 million, up 14% from Q3 2025. Cumulative global collections through the first three quarters of 2026 were 109% of ERC at the end of 2025, and third-quarter cash generation increased 18% year over year.
- Strong U.S. Portfolio Purchasing EnvironmentFavorable U.S. market conditions, including strong lending and elevated charge-off rates, continued to drive robust portfolio supply. U.S. annualized net charge-off volume was estimated at more than $50 billion in Q2 2026, while charge-off rates remained above the 10-year average and purchasing conditions remained favorable.
- MCM U.S. Collections GrowthMCM purchased $310 million of portfolios in Q3 and generated record collections of $589 million, an increase of 17% compared with Q3 2025. Performance was supported by new technologies, enhanced digital capabilities, operational innovation, a large and growing payer book, and stable consumer payment behavior.
- Technology and Operational ImprovementsNew technologies, omnichannel and digital collections, enhanced analytics, and operational initiatives generated more payers earlier in portfolio life cycles and improved adherence to payment plans. Management stated that collections are up approximately 58% from 2023 based on 2026 guidance, while headcount is down by a little over 500 from the 2023 level.
- Improved Collections Yield and Portfolio RevenueCollections increased 14% and portfolio revenue increased 12%. Collection yield improved to 64.3%, up 1.6 percentage points year over year, while portfolio revenue reached $414 million, supported by 11% growth in average receivable portfolios and a portfolio yield of 35.4%.
- Positive Changes in Recoveries and Recent VintagesChanges in recoveries were $111 million, including $52 million of recoveries above forecast and $59 million from changes in expected future recoveries. The 2023, 2024, and 2025 U.S. vintages contributed $88 million, or approximately 80%, of total changes in recoveries. Management said the increased forecasts reflect incremental cash collections and betterment rather than pull-forward.
- Debt Purchasing Revenue and Earnings GrowthDebt purchasing revenue increased 21% to $525 million, with a debt purchasing yield of 44.9%. Total revenue increased 18% to $545 million, while net income increased 66% to $124 million and earnings per share increased 76% to $5.57 from $3.17 in Q3 2025.
- Operating Leverage and Margin ExpansionOperating expenses increased 9% compared with 14% growth in collections, reflecting significant operating leverage. Cash efficiency margin improved to 59.6% from 58.4% a year ago, and the company continues to expect full-year 2026 cash efficiency margin to exceed 58%.
- Solid European PerformanceCabot purchased $80 million of portfolios and generated $164 million of collections in Q3, up 2% from Q3 2025. Cabot remained selective in its deployments while focusing on operational excellence, cost management, and best-practice sharing from MCM; these initiatives continued to drive cash efficiency margin improvement.
- Balance Sheet Strength and LiquidityEncore maintained leverage within its 2x to 3x target range, with leverage closing at 2.3x. The company extended its U.S. facility maturity by one year to October 2029, settled the $230 million convertible notes due in 2029 in cash, reported no significant maturities until 2028, and stated that it has ample liquidity to continue growing.
- Capital Allocation and Higher ROICEncore repurchased approximately $27 million of shares in Q3 and approximately $73 million through the first three quarters of 2026. Trailing 12-month ROIC increased to 15.7% from 10.2% in Q3 2025.
- Raised 2026 GuidanceThe company raised 2026 guidance to global portfolio purchases of $1.5 billion to $1.55 billion, global collections of $2.9 billion to $2.95 billion, and EPS of $15.50 to $16.00. The EPS guidance excludes the potential positive impact of a discrete noncash tax benefit.
- Potential Noncash Tax BenefitEncore stated that it is reasonably possible that it will recognize a discrete noncash tax benefit of approximately $15 million to $20 million in Q4, equivalent to a positive EPS impact of $0.65 to $0.90 for the year. Management said there is a strong likelihood that the benefit will crystallize, subject to the year-end accounting process.
- Confidence in Continued 2027 Earnings GrowthManagement expressed confidence that earnings growth will continue in 2027, citing strong U.S. market conditions, record lending, charge-off rates above 10-year averages, and continued momentum in purchasing, collections, and earnings.
