Q2 2027 Earnings Call Summary
The call was mixed but cautiously constructive. Eagle delivered record revenue, higher operating cash flow, strong liquidity, continued shareholder returns, and progress on major modernization projects. However, these positives were offset by a 14% EPS decline, lower operating earnings in both major sectors, elevated diesel, freight and raw material costs, ongoing Wallboard demand weakness, and operational disruptions at the older Mountain Cement plant.
Eagle expects fiscal 2027 capital expenditures of between $490 million and $525 million, with construction of Mountain Cement on track to be completed later this calendar year and Duke Wallboard construction at mid-fiscal 2028; once Laramie construction is complete, commissioning will take about 2 quarters, while Duke construction and commissioning will occur about 1 year after the Laramie, Wyoming, cement plant is complete. By the later part of fiscal 2028, many cost savings are expected to be accretive to Mountain Cement’s margin profile, although achieving the full 25% cost savings requires selling the full capacity of the new plant and will take several years. Price increases in cement and aggregates are effective January 1, 2027, with cement increases anywhere between $10 to $14, $15 a ton depending upon the market, and about 50% of cement demand is driven by public infrastructure spending.
- Record Revenue and Share RepurchasesSecond-quarter revenue reached a record $653 million, up 2% year over year. EPS was $3.63, the company repurchased $62 million of shares during the quarter, and net leverage remained at 2.1x.
- Improved Safety PerformanceRecordable and lost-time incident rates declined versus the prior year. Eagle said it continues to operate well below industry averages and remains focused on reaching its goal of 0 incidents.
- Mountain Cement Modernization Remains on TrackConstruction of the modernized cement plant in Laramie, Wyoming, is expected to be substantially complete by the next quarterly earnings call. Commissioning is expected to take about 2 quarters.
- Duke Wallboard Modernization ProgressingConstruction and commissioning of the Duke Wallboard modernization are expected to be completed about 1 year after the Laramie cement plant is complete.
- Customer Supply Protected During Cement TransitionManagement said customers should experience no commercial disruption during construction and commissioning because Eagle can use its broader cement network and operate the older kilns as needed.
- Expected Mountain Cement Cost BenefitsMany of the previously highlighted cost savings at Mountain Cement are expected to be accretive to the plant's margin profile by the later part of fiscal 2028. The company reiterated that achieving the full 25% cost savings requires selling the new plant's full capacity, which will take several years.
- Lower Capital Spending Expected After Laramie CompletionOnce construction at Laramie is complete, capital expenditures are expected to step down significantly in fiscal 2028, resulting in increased free cash flow.
- Heavy Materials Demand Supported by Infrastructure and Data CentersHeavy Materials volumes held up despite challenging weather in some markets, supported by public infrastructure and data center activity. Management said customers expect cement and aggregates tailwinds to remain as calendar year 2027 begins.
- Cement and Aggregates Pricing ActionsEagle communicated price increases for cement and aggregates in most markets effective January 1, 2027. Cement increases are expected to range from $10 to $14 or $15 per ton depending on the market.
- Strong Operating Cash FlowOperating cash flow for the first six months increased 7% to $364 million, reflecting the strength of the businesses, the resilience of the operating model, and expected tax benefits from the capital spending program.
- Strategic Capital Investments ContinueFirst-half capital expenditures totaled $250 million, primarily funding the Mountain Cement and Duke Wallboard modernization projects. Fiscal 2027 capital expenditures are expected to be between $490 million and $525 million.
- Capital Returned to ShareholdersDuring the first half of the fiscal year, Eagle returned $162 million through dividends and repurchased approximately 711,000 shares. Approximately 2.2 million shares remained under the current repurchase authorization.
- Strong Liquidity and Balance Sheet FlexibilityAt September 30, 2026, net debt-to-capital was 50% and net debt-to-EBITDA leverage was 2.1x. The company had $241 million of cash and nearly $1 billion of total committed liquidity, with no significant near-term debt maturities.
- Growth and M&A Pipeline Remains ActiveEagle said it continues to evaluate high-impact, high-return organic projects and remains active in M&A, with a robust deal pipeline, especially in aggregates. The company also said it will opportunistically repurchase shares when no compelling investment is immediately available.
- Higher Segment Revenue from VolumesHeavy Materials revenue increased 2%, driven primarily by record cement sales volume supported by infrastructure spending and large private nonresidential projects. Light Materials revenue also increased 2% to $216 million, reflecting higher Wallboard and Recycled Paperboard sales volumes.
