Q4 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call conveyed a generally positive outlook. Dunelm delivered sales growth, market-share gains, gross-margin expansion, stronger cash generation, lower net debt, higher dividends, improved customer satisfaction, digital growth, and continued investment in stores and technology despite a challenging macroeconomic backdrop. These positives outweighed flat profit, cost and inflationary pressures, weaker third-party courier performance, an opening pace below ambition, execution gaps in some digital channels, and a mixed start to Q1.
Forward-looking guidance included that Made to Measure “will support MTM's double-digit growth moving forward,” business rates “will provide an annualized tailwind into next year,” the net debt to EBITDA ratio target remains within “0.2 to 0.6 times,” and operational and technology-led changes are planned to support improvement in home delivery; Dunelm also said it has bigger ambitions for store openings, social channels can continue to grow, and planned scarcity will continue to be a key factor.
- Sales Growth and Market Share GainsTotal sales increased 3.1% to GBP 1,825 million, and Dunelm gained 10 basis points of market share year on year to 7.9% within the GBP 25 billion U.K. homewares and furniture market.
- Gross Margin ExpansionGross margin increased by 10 basis points year on year to 52.5%, benefiting from a foreign exchange tailwind despite increased customer participation in promotional events.
- Strong Cash Generation and Lower Net DebtFree cash flow increased to GBP 155 million from GBP 127 million, while operating cash flow grew 5.7% to GBP 270 million. Operating profit conversion to cash improved from 57% to 69%, supporting a GBP 7 million reduction in year-end net debt to GBP 95 million.
- Healthy Balance SheetThe year-end net debt to EBITDA ratio was 0.3 times, within the targeted range of 0.2 to 0.6 times.
- Dividend Growth and Special DividendThe full-year ordinary dividend increased to 45.5 pence per share, up 2.2% and one pence versus FY 2025. Dunelm also paid a special dividend of 25 pence per share, taking total dividends declared to 70.5 pence per share.
- Improved Customer SatisfactionOverall customer satisfaction increased 2.4% year on year and remained in the top quartile. Store CSAT increased 3%, supported by a renewed focus on service and in-store experience, a revitalized store operating model, self-service tills, and an in-store walkway revamp.
- Digital Sales ExpansionDigitally enabled sales grew by more than 9%, while digital participation increased by two percentage points to 42%. Continued web enhancements, the Dunelm app, and store-assisted digital selling supported the growth.
- Higher-Value App EngagementThe Dunelm app generated a 40% higher basket value than web-only customers and was already ahead of store-only customers on basket value, with higher conversion through the channel.
- Investment in Digital and AI CommerceDunelm continued investing in its digital ecosystem, including the app, social channels such as TikTok and YouTube, and an AI-powered shopping assistant launched with Google as one of the first conversational-commerce launch partners in Europe.
- Product Innovation and Category MomentumThe company brought 6,000 new owned-brand products to market. Heartland products continued to perform strongly, while lighting gained traction with customers, increasing 8 percentage points year on year.
- Strong Campaign and Collaboration PerformanceThe summer living campaign matched the size and scale of the traditional winter warm campaign, with both being the top-performing campaigns. The Yinka Ilori collaboration moved from initial concept to products on shelves and online within 18 months; one rug sold out within a day and a pink and green dining chair sold out within a week.
- Store Estate Expansion and RefitsDunelm opened two new London stores in Wandsworth and Kingston and reopened the Yeovil store following a fire. Kingston delivered business-leading transaction levels, Wandsworth provided continued access to London infill opportunities, and St Albans recorded high single-digit year-on-year increases following its refit.
- Self-Checkout Rollout and Productivity GainsThe self-checkout rollout reached 85% completion, with two-thirds of customers using self-checkout where available. Productivity gains delivered an incremental GBP 15 million over the full year, driven particularly by labor optimization in stores, carriage costs, logistics, and marketing efficiencies.
- Made to Measure Growth OpportunityMade to Measure delivered strong growth, and Salesforce technology improved fitter availability. Management said the changes will support MTM's double-digit growth moving forward.
- Investment in Stores, Technology, and DecarbonizationCapital expenditure was GBP 43 million, including GBP 27 million invested in the store estate and GBP 13 million in technology, including the build and launch of the app. Store investment also covered two new stores, seven major refits, and continued decarbonization efforts.
- Strategy for Future GrowthDunelm introduced its customer-led strategy, summarized as the ambition to win hearts and homes, with priorities to become the homeware specialist with something for everyone, deliver seamless omnichannel experiences, and transform capabilities to drive sustainable growth.
