Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call had a positive overall tone. Management highlighted strong long-term investment performance, continued credit and alternatives inflows, product and geographic expansion, year-to-date financial growth, a strong balance sheet and multiple growth initiatives. These positives outweighed the significant but largely identified challenges from equity underperformance, $10.6 billion of quarterly net outflows, lower ending AUM, higher year-over-year expenses and expected near-term distribution-related AUM reduction.
For the fourth quarter, management anticipates launching an ETF share class of the Artisan Select Equity Fund and Artisan Focus Fund, staging these anticipated launches over the next several quarters, with a few more in Q1 and several more throughout the course of 2027; it is developing an interval fund structure for wealth clients in 2027. Annual income and capital gains mutual fund distributions are currently estimated to reduce AUM by $2.5 billion for distributions that will not be reinvested, approximately 3% of AUM is subject to performance fees, and management is projecting a similar contribution to last year’s approximately $29 million of performance fees, subject to market and performance conditions through the end of the year, with 7 of 8 performance fee accounts in the money. The recurring management fee rate is expected to be somewhere around 70 basis points, up probably a little over 1 basis point than where we were trending, and relatively stable. Fixed-cost guidance remains mid single digits, excluding the addition of the cost from Grand View and the exchange of kicks with the LTI grant.
- Strong Long-Term Investment PerformanceAt quarter end, 92% of assets under management outperformed their benchmarks over 10 years and 99% had outperformed since inception, gross of fees.
- Improved Recent Performance in Key Equity StrategiesAs of October 26, 75% and 84% of AUM were outperforming over the trailing 1-year and 3-year periods, respectively. International value and global value, which had impacted the 1- and 3-year figures, had strong performance in October and were described as having a 300- to 400-basis-point tailwind.
- Credit and Alternatives Continued to Deliver Strong ResultsThe company stated that 100% of credit AUM had outperformed the benchmark over the reported periods since the first credit franchise launched in 2014. All three EMsights Capital Group strategies had generated double-digit annualized returns since inception with meaningful excess returns relative to their benchmarks.
- Positive Credit and Alternatives FlowsCredit and alternative strategies generated $1.1 billion of combined net inflows in the third quarter and $3.2 billion year to date. Credit strategies generated $290 million of net inflows, marking the 17th consecutive quarter of positive credit flows, while alternatives raised approximately $770 million, led by growth in the Artisan Global Unconstrained mutual fund.
- Credit and Alternatives AUM Nearly DoubledCombined credit and alternative AUM has nearly doubled over the past five years to more than $26 billion, increasing from 8% to 15% of firm-wide AUM. The credit business has grown to more than $16 billion of AUM since launching in 2014.
- Expansion of Credit and Alternatives CapabilitiesThe company added custom credit solutions and a floating rate strategy, onboarded EMsights Capital Group, launched Global Unconstrained, emerging market debt opportunities and emerging market local opportunities, added fixed-income talent to the International Value Group, launched the global special situation strategy, and acquired Grandview Property Partners.
- Grandview Property Partners Anchor Investor SecuredThe company recently closed on an anchor investor for Grandview Property Partners' fourth flagship fund and said it would be raising a new flagship series fund.
- Broadening Client Access and Product VehiclesArtisan launched 13 new UCITS fund share classes during 2026 to expand its reach into the UK and European wealth market. It anticipates launching ETF share classes for the Artisan Select Equity Fund and Artisan Focus Fund in the fourth quarter and is developing an interval fund structure for public and private credit capabilities for wealth clients in 2027.
- Warm Initial Demand for the Planned Interval FundManagement said it was seeing a fair amount of demand after discussing the planned interval fund with key relationships, describing the initial reception as pretty warm and expressing confidence that it would be an important and growing credit initiative.
- Growth Opportunities Across Credit, Alternatives and International DistributionManagement identified continued expansion in floating rate, credit opportunities, public-private credit, European syndicated loans and bonds, potential CLOs, and European UCITS distribution as growth avenues. The company also reported a meaningful increase in pipeline dollars, with most of the current opportunity aligned to credit and wealth.
- Pipeline and International Activity IncreasedRFP numbers remained relatively flat quarter over quarter and year over year, but management said the pipeline had grown pretty meaningfully. The company also reported a meaningful uptick in activity in the UK, Europe and Middle East wealth markets after adding resources in those regions.
- Quarterly Revenue and Operating Profit GrowthThird-quarter revenue was $313 million, up 1% from the June quarter and up 4% from the September 2025 quarter. Adjusted operating income increased 9% sequentially, adjusted operating margin expanded 260 basis points to 35.5%, and adjusted earnings per share increased to $1.03.
- Year-to-Date Financial GrowthYear-to-date average AUM and revenue increased 7% compared with the first nine months of the prior year. Year-to-date adjusted operating income increased 6% to $307 million, adjusted operating margin was relatively stable at 33%, and adjusted earnings per share increased 6% to $2.84.
- Lower Sequential Operating ExpensesAdjusted operating expenses declined 2% from the June quarter, primarily due to lower employee-related costs and the continued roll-off of seasonal expenses, partly offset by increased variable incentive compensation associated with higher revenue.
- Strong Balance Sheet and Shareholder ReturnThe company ended the quarter with $352 million of cash, renewed and expanded its five-year revolving credit facility to $150 million, and left the facility unused. The Board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.88 per share, a 10% increase from the prior quarter and unchanged from a year ago.
- Diversified Client BaseManagement said its largest clients were diversified across teams, strategies and channels. The top 15% to 20% of clients spanned six teams and nine strategies, with wealth exposure spread across multiple clients and channels.
- Broadly Distributed Performance Fee OpportunitySeven of the eight teams with performance-fee accounts were in the money as of the call. Management highlighted strong performance-fee opportunities in EMsights and said the opportunity was broadly dispersed and diversified.
