Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call presented strong demand, revenue growth, premium and loyalty momentum, international expansion, and progress toward a more diversified business model. However, these positives were offset by significant near-term fuel costs, substantial expected losses, Hawaii pressure, higher nonfuel costs, lower capacity, and balance-sheet concerns. Management remained confident in the longer-term strategy, but the near-term financial outlook was materially challenged.
For the fourth quarter, Alaska expects capacity growth of approximately 1% to 1.5% year over year, unit revenue performance broadly in line with the third quarter, up low double digits, economic fuel cost to average between $4.65 and $4.85 per gallon, nonfuel unit costs to grow mid-single digits against capacity growth of less than 1.5%, a healthy positive spread to persist, and an adjusted loss per share of between $2.50 $2.00; for the full year, it expects an adjusted loss per share of between $5.50 $5.00. Alaska expects at least $3 to $4 of core earnings improvement next year, is focused on a long-term cost growth rate in the 4% range and diversified revenues of up to 60%, and is targeting a 40% premium revenue mix by 2030, 15 nonstop international routes from Seattle and Seattle’s number 1 long haul international carrier position by 2030, continued strong annual program cash growth through 2030, and tripling cargo revenues by the end of the decade.
- Revenue Growth and Improved Unit Revenue SpreadThird-quarter total revenue was $4.3 billion, up 14% year over year while capacity grew 2.4%. Unit revenue increased nearly 12%, yield grew 13.4%, and September yield was up approximately 17% year over year. The RASM-to-CASM ex spread improved to 7 points from 2 points in the second quarter.
- Healthy Demand and Fourth-Quarter Revenue OutlookManagement said demand remains healthy, with continued strength in pricing and yield trends across much of the network. Fourth-quarter unit revenue is expected to be up low double digits, broadly in line with third-quarter performance, while monthly fourth-quarter yields were described as up double digits versus last year.
- Diversified Revenue Mix ExpansionDiversified revenues reached 54% of the total mix. Management said this was up 4 points from last year and 1 point from the prior quarter, while also separately describing the increase as 3 points from last year. The company is targeting a diversified revenue mix of up to 60%.
- Premium Revenue MomentumPremium traffic grew approximately 24.5% year over year and represented more than 36% of total revenue, up 3 points from last year. Narrow-body premium retrofits are complete, with the full annualized benefit expected next year, and the company continues to expand premium offerings across its wide-body fleet toward a 40% premium revenue mix by 2030.
- Corporate Revenue and International Premium Share GainsManaged corporate revenue increased 30% in the third quarter, and future bookings were approximately 30% above prior-year levels. In London Heathrow, Alaska's business-class cabin performance exceeded its fair market share by 3 points in the third quarter.
- International Network ExpansionAlaska plans to launch year-round Seattle service to Osaka, Japan, and Papeete, Tahiti, next spring. This will bring nonstop international routes from Seattle to 9 as the company works toward 15 and its goal of becoming Seattle's number 1 long-haul international carrier by 2030. Management expects to file with the DOT to join the Atlantic and Pacific joint international businesses in the coming weeks.
- International Performance and Joint Venture OpportunityInternational load increased 7.5 points in the third quarter and international unit revenue increased 24%. Management said joining international joint businesses would provide upside to current economics by improving distribution, capacity, and pricing, with 85% of transatlantic traffic currently in a joint business.
- Loyalty Program GrowthLoyalty program cash remuneration was $721 million, up 21% during the quarter, supported by strong card spend and continued engagement. The Summit card had been launched one year earlier, with roughly half of cardholders new to Alaska's portfolio, 40% from outside core geographies, and international spend several times higher than the rest of the portfolio.
- Cargo Revenue and Fleet ExpansionCargo revenue grew 9%. The company reiterated its goal of tripling cargo revenue by the end of the decade, describing the growth path as linear and steady. Four new narrow-body freighters are expected next year, doubling narrow-body freighter capacity, while the company continues to seek improved economics and expanded service through a renewed Amazon partnership.
- Liquidity and Financial FlexibilityAlaska ended the quarter with approximately $3.3 billion of liquidity and $20 billion in unencumbered assets. Debt-to-capitalization remained stable at 66%, and management said restoring balance-sheet strength is its top financial priority as earnings improve and free cash flow is generated.
- Nonfuel Cost Sequential ImprovementThird-quarter nonfuel unit costs increased 4.4% year over year on 2.4% capacity growth, improving from a 6.5% increase in the second quarter. Management said it continues to identify opportunities to optimize the business and expects a healthy positive RASM-to-CASM ex spread to persist into the fourth quarter.
- Core Earnings Improvement ExpectedManagement expressed confidence in at least $3 to $4 of core earnings improvement next year, regardless of fuel, and said the current earnings level is not indicative of what the business should earn in a stable macro environment.
- Fleet Modernization and Premium Aircraft PlansAlaska expects 22 737-10 deliveries next year, beginning sometime late in the first quarter. The first tranche will use the standard domestic configuration, while a second tranche planned for 2028 will use the Aurora configuration with lie-flat seats. Management said the aircraft will fit into the fleet and replace retiring 737-700s over time.
- Technology Reliability and InvestmentManagement said investments in infrastructure stability have been executed for more than 12 months and have produced more reliable stability in tier-1 operational systems. Alaska plans to continue investing in technology, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and talent, supported by the appointment of a new chief information technology officer.
- Hawaii Improvement OpportunitiesManagement expressed optimism for Hawaii in 2027, citing the expected absence of multiple generational storms, the April transition to a single PSS, Hawaiian's entry into the oneworld alliance, and more constructive industry capacity. Hawaii unit revenues were already showing double-digit increases in January and February based on early observations.
