Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 27, 2026|% Change Since:-4.83%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was clearly constructive, with strong earnings growth, positive operating leverage, robust loan and deposit growth, improving credit metrics, a strong pipeline and continued progress toward higher returns. The main challenges were funding-cost and deposit-pricing pressure, lower noninterest income, some softness and required modifications in parts of the multifamily portfolio, narrower capital buffers and the fact that long-term return targets have not yet been reached. The highlights significantly outweighed the lowlights.

Company Guidance

Management’s quarterly operating objectives remain $200 million of loan growth, $200 million of deposit growth and $2 million of core earnings growth, with “absolute visibility” in the fourth quarter and “enough strength” to see the first quarter of next year, although overall growth is expected to “step back a little” and be “probably closer to the 2-2-2 plan”; NIM is expected to improve 2 to 3 basis points in each quarter going into ’27, with 6 to 9 basis points for the year, while deposit beta is expected to be 50% to 60%. Next year’s operating expense growth is expected to be “mid- to upper single digit” and “mid- to single-digit growth”; about $500 million of rent-regulated multifamily will reprice over the next 5 quarters, and over the next 2 years about 20% of the book, or about $1.4 billion in fixed-rate assets, will reprice with a pickup of somewhere between 150 to 200 bps. The company is targeting 90 bps ROA, “maybe getting to 1% early next year,” closer to 1.25% in the fourth quarter of ’27, annualized core earnings of about $180 million versus about $130 million, and long-term objectives of a 1.25%-plus return on assets and a 14% plus return on equity or better.

  • Strong Earnings and Sustained GrowthNet income available to common shareholders increased 17% sequentially to $18.5 million, or $0.99 per diluted share, compared with $15.8 million, or $0.86, in the second quarter. Diluted earnings per share increased 15% on a linked-quarter basis. The company reported 10 consecutive quarters of revenue growth and 6 consecutive quarters of earnings growth.
  • Revenue Growth and Positive Operating LeverageTotal revenue was $88 million, up 2% sequentially and 24% year-over-year, while operating expenses were $55 million, down 1% sequentially and up 5% year-over-year. Core pretax pre-provision revenue was $32.3 million, up 76% year-over-year and approximately $2 million, or 6%, sequentially. The efficiency ratio improved to 63%, down approximately 1.7 percentage points sequentially and nearly 16 full percentage points from the third quarter of 2024.
  • Net Interest Income and Margin ImprovementNet interest income increased to $68 million, up $3.6 million, or 6% sequentially and 33% year-over-year. Net interest margin was 3.34%, up 2 basis points from the second quarter. Loans originated during the quarter carried yields of approximately 6.4%, while new deposits came in in the mid-2% range.
  • Strong Loan and Deposit GrowthTotal loans increased $403 million sequentially to $7.1 billion and were up 17% year-over-year. Deposits increased $301 million, or 4%, quarter-to-quarter, to $7.4 billion and were up approximately $800 million, or 12%, year-over-year. Third-quarter growth exceeded the company's quarterly operating objectives of $200 million of loan growth and $200 million of deposit growth.
  • Expansion of Core Operating RelationshipsNoninterest-bearing operating relationships increased 18% year-over-year. Noninterest-bearing demand deposits ended the quarter at approximately $1.6 billion, also reflecting 18% year-over-year growth. Over the past five quarters, the company opened an average of more than 600 noninterest-bearing operating accounts per quarter.
  • Diversified Commercial Lending GrowthCommercial and industrial lending grew $409 million year-over-year, up 15%, with growth across virtually every asset category. Third-quarter loan growth was diversified across the franchise, with C&I and commercial real estate showing particularly strong results.
  • Improved ReturnsReturn on average tangible equity was 11.4%, up 587 basis points since the third quarter of 2024. Management said the company's annualized pretax pre-provision revenue reached $129 million in the quarter, approximately 2.7 times the trough observed in the third quarter of 2024.
  • Improving Credit MetricsNonperforming assets declined by $14 million, or 20%, sequentially, to $58 million, representing 0.68% of total assets versus 1.13% a year ago. Loans 30 to 89 days past due declined $9 million, or 18%, sequentially, to $39 million, representing 0.56% of total loans. Net charge-offs declined to $4.7 million from $5.9 million in the second quarter, and allowance coverage for nonperforming loans improved to 126%.
  • Managed Reduction in Rent-Regulated Multifamily ExposureThe New York rent-regulated multifamily portfolio declined to $775 million and represented approximately 11% of total loans, compared with 18% two years ago and 18% at September 30, 2024. Management said the decline reflects portfolio runoff and growth elsewhere in the loan portfolio and that the company is not originating anything new in that space.
  • Wealth Management Franchise Remains SignificantWealth management ended the quarter with $13.6 billion in assets under management and administration. Wealth revenue was $17.3 million, up 9% year-over-year, and $51 million year-to-date. Management described the wealth franchise as the anchor of its private banking model and said gross inflows remained solid.
  • Strong Fourth-Quarter PipelineManagement said loan and deposit pipelines entering the fourth quarter were strong, with absolute visibility into the company's $200 million of loan growth, $200 million of deposit growth and $2 million of pretax pre-provision earnings objectives for the fourth quarter. Management also said there was enough pipeline strength to provide visibility into the first quarter of next year.
  • Future Net Interest Margin SupportManagement expects net interest margin to improve by 2 to 3 basis points in each quarter going into 2027. Over the next two years, approximately 20% of the portfolio, or about $1.4 billion of fixed-rate assets, will reprice; the weighted average coupon is around 3.90%, and management expects to pick up between 150 and 200 basis points on repricing.
  • Capital Support and Proactive ManagementThe company maintained buffers above regulatory capital thresholds and issued the remaining $20 million of convertible preferred equity in July, supporting capital at both the bank and holding company levels. It also launched a voluntary dividend reinvestment program in the fourth quarter, scheduled to close in mid-November, as a supplemental source of capital.
  • Investment in Artificial Intelligence and TechnologyManagement said it has leaned into artificial intelligence across the enterprise, established AI champions in every area of the bank and stood up 100 agents that were in final testing, including for loan closings. Management expects investment in 2027 to lean more toward technology than people.
  • Long-Term Return Objectives and Execution PlanThe company's long-term objectives remain a 1.25%-plus return on assets and a 14% plus return on equity or better. Management said it is not there yet but is moving toward both benchmarks. It is targeting approximately $180 million of annualized core earnings, compared with approximately $130 million currently, and said it remains focused on reaching the desired return range by the fourth quarter of 2027.
  • Investment-Grade Credit RatingMoody's affirmed the company's investment-grade rating during the quarter with a stable outlook.
