Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Oct 14, 2026|% Change Since:5.08%|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was predominantly positive, supported by record loan production, nearly 12% annualized legacy-market loan growth, improving production in acquired markets, strong capital, fee-income momentum, progress on the Lincoln merger and confidence in 2027 organic growth. The main challenges were declining deposits and noninterest-bearing deposit mix, pressure on net interest income and margin, higher charge-offs, consumer balance stress, and a decline in reported tangible book value per share due to AOCI. Management remained constructive on credit, growth, technology initiatives and the transaction outlook.

Company Guidance

For the fourth quarter, excluding Lincoln, Equity expects margin to return to the 4.25% to 4.35% range, noninterest income between $10 million and $11 million, and noninterest expense between $47 million and $48 million; it continues to expect a provision run rate of roughly $1.5 million to $2 million per quarter, depending on loan growth and charge-off levels. Lincoln is expected to close in the fourth quarter, convert on to Equity systems in the second quarter of 2027, and contribute $0.27 to EPS, with half the cost savings realized in the year and 2027 is where the accretion begins; pro forma will be approximately $9.1 billion as a company, with pro forma TCE to total assets of approximately 8.5% and total risk-based capital of approximately 13.4% at close. On an organic basis, single digit upwards of that is something that we can definitely target in 2027, specifically mid-single digit, with somewhere between 5% and 7% something that we can hit as a company, while without the acquisition, we could be actually stronger than that; each additional rate hike adds between 3 and 5 basis points for every 25 basis points, and Lincoln’s impact on run rate margin is 8 to 10 basis points down, or 2 to 3 basis points of degradation based on a December 1 close.

  • Strong Third-Quarter Earnings and ReturnsNet income was $26.8 million, or $1.29 per diluted share. Core net income was $29.0 million, or $1.40 per share, and core return on average tangible common equity was 16.5%.
  • Record Pretax Pre-Provision Earnings and EfficiencyPretax pre-provision earnings were $36.9 million, the highest since the three companies were combined. The efficiency ratio was 54%, while noninterest expense excluding $1.0 million of merger costs was $46.7 million, flat with the second quarter.
  • Organic Loan Growth in Legacy MarketsTotal loans grew $39 million to $5.44 billion, the first quarterly increase since the acquisitions closed. Legacy-market balances grew $106 million, or 2.9%, to $3.5 billion, equivalent to nearly 12% annualized growth.
  • Record Loan Production and Growing PipelineThe bank closed $379 million of loans at an average rate of 6.9%, up $64 million, or 20%, from the prior quarter and up $136 million, or 56%, from a year ago. The 75% weighted pipeline was $534 million, up 27% from the prior quarter, and line utilization was 55.3%.
  • Expansion of Banking TeamsThe company hired 13 bankers year-to-date across Oklahoma City, Omaha, Lincoln, Wichita and Des Moines, with those teams still ramping up.
  • Improved Production in Acquired MarketsAlthough balances in acquired markets continued to decline period over period, production improved by 55% as teams gained traction after integrating into Equity's processes.
  • Account and Digital User GrowthLegacy markets produced 6,269 accounts during the quarter, up 22% from the same quarter last year. Digital active users reached almost 79,000, up 10% year over year. The company also opened 759 business accounts, with the average balance per business account growing nearly 4%.
  • Fee Income MomentumTreasury fees grew 4% sequentially and 11% year over year. Debit and credit card, trust and wealth management, and treasury businesses all grew. Noninterest income was $10.8 million, up $0.5 million from $10.3 million of core noninterest income in the prior quarter, and represented 12.9% of total revenue versus 11.2% previously.
  • Technology and Automation InitiativesThe company is continuing to invest in technology, process automation, lead generation and expanded customer services. Management said these initiatives are expected over time to allow balance-sheet growth without expense growth at the same pace and to create positive operating leverage.
  • Lincoln Bancorp Merger ProgressingThe announced merger with Lincoln Bancorp, the holding company of Lincoln Savings Bank, is on track to close in the fourth quarter. Lincoln operates 16 locations across Central and Northeast Iowa and adds a presence in the Des Moines and Waterloo-Cedar Falls areas. The pro forma company is expected to be approximately $9.1 billion, with system conversion planned for the second quarter of 2027.
  • Lincoln Strategic and Financial ContributionManagement said Lincoln brings exceptional banking talent, deep relationships, strong communities and a strong in-market deposit franchise. No branches are planned to be closed or consolidated. Management expects the transaction to provide cost savings and earnings accretion, with half the cost savings realized during 2027 and accretion beginning in 2027.
  • Strong Credit Metrics and ResolutionsThe allowance for credit losses was 1.18% of loans, and classified assets to regulatory capital declined 140 basis points during the quarter to 10.42%. Management said it remained comfortable with the overall credit posture, and noted that the bank had cleaned up classified assets through positive resolutions.
  • Solid Capital Generation and Dividend IncreaseTangible common equity was 9.1%, CET1 was 12.15%, total risk-based capital was 14.94%, and capital generation was approximately $21 million for the quarter. The dividend was increased 22% to $0.22 per share.
  • Progress Toward 2026 Earnings TargetYear-to-date core earnings per share were $4.14, putting the company in a position to surpass its $5 target for 2026.
  • 2027 Organic Growth TargetManagement said organic loan growth of approximately 5% to 7% could be achieved in 2027, describing this as a mid-single-digit target. Management also said organic growth could be stronger without the acquisition.
  • Deposit-Gathering OpportunitiesManagement expects seasonal fourth-quarter deposit inflows from approximately 50 to 100 municipalities whose tax revenues flow through operating accounts at Equity. Teams are also using tools to identify additional customer business held at other banks and are focused on noninterest-bearing and low-cost commercial and retail relationships.
  • Active but Selective M&A StrategyManagement said four or five M&A conversations are active. Equity can do one or two deals per year but does not need to complete another transaction to remain meaningful and relevant. Future opportunities are expected to focus on the company's existing footprint.
  • Infrastructure Readiness for Further ScaleManagement said substantial progress had been made in risk management, compliance and operating processes over the past three years. The company believes it would be ready to meet the challenges if a transaction took it above $10 billion in assets.
  • Loan Pricing Remains AccretiveNew loan production was priced at an average yield of 6.91%, which management said was accretive to the full portfolio. The spot coupon on the loan portfolio increased 8 basis points to 6.48%, and management said production and repricing would continue to be accretive to the book.
