Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was broadly positive, driven by an eighth consecutive quarterly beat, nearly 80% year-over-year DCAI growth, improving Intel 3 and Intel 18A yields and strong demand across server CPUs and purpose-built silicon. However, the company faces significant near-term challenges from PC market weakness, memory shortages, substrate and manufacturing constraints, the Israel factory shutdown, an ongoing Foundry operating loss and expected negative free cash flow in 2027. Highlights significantly outweighed the lowlights, although management acknowledged substantial execution work remains.
Intel guided Q4 revenue to a range of $15 billion to $16 billion, with a midpoint of $15.5 billion, non-GAAP gross margin of 38%, a tax rate of 11% and EPS of $0.25; guidance includes an impact of roughly $300 million to revenue and 200 basis points to gross margin from Fab 28. DCAI revenue is expected to grow mid-teens percent sequentially, with purpose-built silicon growing faster than DCAI overall, while CCPG revenue is expected to decline greater than 20% sequentially. Non-GAAP operating expenses are expected to be approximately $4.4 billion in Q4 and approximately $16.3 billion for the full year, NCI approximately $250 million in Q4 and approximately $1.1 billion in both 2027 and 2028, and Q4 fully diluted share count 5.44 billion. Industry server CPU units are expected to grow more than 30% in both 2026 and 2027, the 2026 PC unit TAM is expected to decline approximately 12% with second half units down more than 20%, and 2027 PC unit TAM is expected to decline roughly 10%. 2026 gross capital expenditures remains on track to be $20 billion, 2027 gross capital spending is expected to be up strongly, and the company expects next year to be an investment year with probably not a dynamic where we're going to have positive free cash flow next year, while targeting at least 20% ROI on all of these nodes and long-term double-digit revenue growth.
- Third-Quarter Results Exceeded GuidanceIntel delivered $16.5 billion of Q3 revenue, non-GAAP gross margin of 44.1% and non-GAAP EPS of $0.52, exceeding guidance of 38% gross margin and $0.38 EPS. This was the eighth consecutive quarter in which Intel exceeded its financial expectations.
- Strong Cash Position and Equity OfferingOperating cash flow was $5.1 billion, and Intel ended the quarter with approximately $54 billion in cash and short-term investments plus $15 billion of borrowing capacity under its extended revolvers. The August equity offering raised $23 billion and provided financial resources to support growth investments.
- Data Center Revenue Growth AcceleratedDCAI revenue was $7.3 billion, up 17% sequentially and nearly 80% year-over-year, led by strong output from Intel's factory network and external suppliers. DCAI revenue is on track to finish 2026 nearly $10 billion above expectations entering the year.
- DCAI Profitability ImprovedDCAI operating profit was $3 billion, representing 42% of revenue and increasing approximately $600 million sequentially. The improvement was driven by higher revenue and lower operating expenses.
- Purpose-Built Silicon Continued Rapid GrowthPurpose-built silicon revenue increased more than 50% sequentially and more than doubled year-over-year in Q3. The business has tripled over the last 3 years, and management expects it to triple again over the next few years.
- Server Product Road Map AdvancedGranite Rapids on Intel 3 became one of the fastest-ramping server products and the largest product family in Intel's server portfolio. Clearwater Forest, Intel's first Intel 18A server product, is shipping for revenue, with significant 2027 demand, while Diamond Rapids, Intel's first Intel 18A-P server product, is sampling and remains on track to ramp in 2027.
- New Server and AI Customer EngagementsIntel announced an agreement with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure to deploy its latest-generation CPUs for Oracle's AI build-out. Multiple customers are also interested in signing long-term agreements to secure CPU rollouts.
- Crescent Island GPU ProgressedIntel unveiled its Crescent Island inference-optimized GPU, now introduced as the Intel GPU D-series. Early feedback was encouraging, performance was tracking well, and customer interest was running ahead of initial expectations.
- Client Product Portfolio StrengthenedIntel successfully ramped Panther Lake on Intel 18A. Wildcat Lake demand was outstripping supply, with units increasing approximately 70% sequentially and the product sold out. Nova Lake, Intel's first Intel 18A-P client product, was tracking ahead of schedule, with design wins expected to be twice those of Panther Lake at launch.
- AI PC and Edge Businesses Showed ResilienceAI PC revenue grew 35% year-over-year even as total CCPG revenue declined 5%. Intel's edge business was more resilient, supported by continued momentum in edge and physical AI design wins.
- Foundry Yield and Cost Improvements ContinuedIntel 3 and Intel 18A yields both increased during the quarter, with Intel 18A improving at a double-digit rate. Wafer output on both nodes exceeded expectations. Intel 3 costs improved approximately 15% from Q1 levels, while Intel 18A costs declined approximately 40% since Q1.
- Intel 18A Progressed Toward ScaleIntel 18A yields continued upward toward industry-standard levels, ahead of internal projections. Since Q1, Intel 18A client CPUs increased from less than 5% of revenue to nearly one-third of client CPU revenue.
- Foundry Road Map and Customer Engagement AdvancedIntel 18A-P remained on track for launch by year-end across the internal product portfolio, and external customer engagement continued to build. Intel released its industry-standard 0.9 PDK for 14A to select customers and said multiple potential 14A customers were progressing.
- Advanced Packaging and Manufacturing Capacity ExpandedEMIB and EMIB-T continued to make progress for internal products and saw significant external customer traction. Intel also reported robust progress in HBI readiness, additional capacity coming online across its network, Intel 3 tool installation progressing in Ireland, 18A ramping in Oregon and Arizona, and additional advanced-packaging capacity being added in New Mexico and Malaysia.
- Equipment Commitments Increased to Support GrowthIntel's 2026 gross capital expenditures remained on track at $20 billion, while 2027 gross capital spending is expected to be up strongly. Firm purchase orders to equipment suppliers increased nearly 40% sequentially, and Intel accelerated clean-room build-outs, including Fab 62 in Arizona.
- Organizational Transformation ContinuedManagement said Intel had dramatically resized its workforce, eliminated middle management and bureaucracy, streamlined its executive ranks, established an almost entirely new leadership team, and installed an engineering-centric culture during the first 1.5 years of its transformation.
- Long-Term CPU and Technology Opportunities ExpandedManagement estimated that server CPU TAM, driven largely by agentic workloads, could increase as much as 5x over 5 years, from $40 billion to more than $200 billion. Intel also continued investing in silicon photonics, neuromorphic computing, advanced materials and quantum computing, and announced its intent to acquire Classiq to move its quantum efforts toward commercialization.
- Long-Term Revenue Growth Outlook Remained PositiveManagement said Intel has line of sight to long-term double-digit revenue growth with meaningful leverage and improving margins, supported by opportunities in server CPUs, edge and physical AI, purpose-built silicon, advanced packaging and external wafer foundry services.
