Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive. Management reported solid third-quarter and year-to-date execution, raised 2026 guidance, provided 2027 guidance representing 9% midpoint growth, extended the 7% to 9% earnings-growth outlook through 2030 and 2035, and outlined substantial customer-driven investment opportunities. The main challenges were higher financing costs, required equity financing, some withdrawn studied load, project timing and ongoing regulatory-lag considerations, but these were presented alongside mitigating actions and continued confidence in the company's growth and financial position.
CenterPoint raised 2026 non-GAAP EPS guidance to $1.90 to $1.92, representing nearly 9% growth at the midpoint over 2025 results; 2027 non-GAAP EPS guidance is $2.07 to $2.09, representing 9% growth at the midpoint. Management expects non-GAAP EPS growth at the mid- to high end of the 7% to 9% annual range through 2030 and 7% to 9% annually through 2035, enterprise rate base CAGR of more than 14% through 2030, and sustained double-digit rate base growth over the course of the 10-year plan. The 10-year capital investment plan increased from $66.7 billion to $70.7 billion through 2035, with $1.5 billion accelerated into the first 5 years, $4.5 billion of incremental and accelerated investments deployed by the end of 2030, and at least $10 billion of additional investment opportunities through 2035; 2026 capital investment is expected to come in modestly below the $6.8 billion target due solely to project timing. The remaining 10-year equity financing guide increased by $1.6 billion to $4.5 billion, with approximately $4 billion expected to be issued from 2027 through 2030, including $500 million to $700 million of common equity in 2027, while O&M is expected to reduce by 1% to 2% from the prior year.
- Strong Third-Quarter Earnings and Raised 2026 GuidanceThird-quarter 2026 GAAP EPS was $0.50 and non-GAAP EPS was $0.53. Year-to-date results reached nearly 80% of the midpoint of the original full-year guidance range of $1.89 to $1.91, supporting an increase in 2026 non-GAAP EPS guidance to $1.90 to $1.92. The midpoint represents nearly 9% growth from 2025 delivered results and would mark the fifth year of more than 8% growth since 2020.
- Extended Long-Term Earnings OutlookManagement extended its outlook for non-GAAP EPS growth at the mid- to high end of the 7% to 9% annual range through 2030 and expects 7% to 9% annual growth through 2035. 2027 non-GAAP EPS guidance is $2.07 to $2.09, representing 9% growth at the midpoint from increased 2026 guidance.
- Customer-Driven Capital Plan ExpansionCenterPoint increased its 10-year capital investment plan by $4 billion, from $66.7 billion to $70.7 billion through 2035, and accelerated an additional $1.5 billion of projects from after 2030 into the first five years of the plan. Including earlier 2026 updates, the plan has increased by $5.7 billion, or nearly 9%, since the 2025 Investor Day.
- Strong Greater Houston Customer DemandGreater Houston customer demand submitted as eligible load for ERCOT's Batch Zero process was approximately 14 gigawatts. Management remains highly confident in 10 gigawatts of baseload demand, expects approximately 2 gigawatts to remain at studied load, and expects to energize at least 14 gigawatts by the end of 2030 when smaller transmission and distribution customers are included.
- Additional Houston Distribution and Commercial GrowthHouston Electric received nearly 1 gigawatt of distribution-level load requests during the last year. Industrial and commercial leasing activity in the Houston area was up more than 30% from the prior year, and the company reported record third-quarter leasing of new commercial warehouse space in Houston, up 30% for the quarter.
- Transmission Capacity and Speed-to-Market AdvantageHouston Electric's more than 10 gigawatts of existing system capacity helped attract customer demand by enabling fast, efficient and cost-effective interconnections. Management identified more than a dozen projects through its transmission study across import transmission capacity, system stability and intra-regional transmission capacity.
- Expected Customer Savings From GrowthAt least 14 gigawatts of anticipated demand through the end of the decade are expected to generate $5 billion in customer savings across Texas over the next 10 years.
- High Rate Base Growth OutlookThe increased and accelerated investments are expected to drive enterprise rate base compound annual growth of more than 14% through 2030 and support sustained double-digit rate base growth over the company's 10-year plan.
- Brownfield Project Mix Supports DeploymentApproximately 85% of the initial projects identified in the transmission study are brownfield projects within existing rights of way. Management stated that this provides a more straightforward path to expanding system capacity, allows construction to proceed faster and minimizes disruption to communities.
- Additional Investment Opportunities Through 2035Beyond the announced $4 billion increase, CenterPoint continues to see at least $10 billion of additional investment opportunities through 2035, including additional Houston transmission infrastructure, resiliency initiatives and large-load opportunities in Indiana.
- Reliability Improvement and Planned Resiliency InvestmentHouston Electric has improved reliability by nearly 40% over the past several years. Management expects greater visibility into additional resiliency investments in the second half of next year and is targeting a filing for its next System Resiliency Plan by the end of 2027.
- Indiana Large-Load OpportunityCenterPoint anticipates signing a deal with a large-load customer in Indiana by the end of 2026. The company has freed up approximately 700 megawatts of existing capacity and believes it can scale to about 1.4 gigawatts with modest transmission upgrades and conversion of its simple-cycle plant.
- Disciplined Financing PlanThe company plans to increase its remaining 10-year equity financing guide by $1.6 billion to $4.5 billion, with incremental equity representing only about 25% of the funding requirement across the $5.7 billion of capital plan increases announced this year. The financing guide remains below the previously communicated 47% funding guide for incremental capital investment.
- Financing Needs and Capital Deployment VisibilityCenterPoint expects to issue approximately $4 billion from 2027 through 2030, including $500 million to $700 million of common equity in 2027. It expects to deploy $4.5 billion of the incremental and accelerated investments by the end of 2030, beginning in 2027.
- Potential Financing TailwindsManagement identified potential financing benefits from a sublease or sale of the temporary generation units, customer demand charges of roughly $6 million per gigawatt per year from future opportunities, portfolio optimization and efforts to reduce regulatory cash lag. These items are not reflected in the updated plan.
- Improving Credit PositionThe adjusted FFO-to-debt ratio under Moody's methodology was 13.7% at the end of the third quarter. The approximately $1.4 billion of proceeds from the October 1 sale of the Ohio gas LDC business would have improved the trailing 12-month ratio by approximately 50 basis points, while an expected Corporate Alternative Minimum Tax refund is expected to improve full-year 2026 credit metrics by an additional 60 basis points. CenterPoint now has stable outlooks across all rating agencies.
- O&M Reduction ProgressO&M was flat in the quarter, and management remains on track to reduce O&M by 1% to 2% from the prior year. Year-to-date, O&M had already declined 1%.
- Favorable Rate Recovery and Weather ContributionCompared with the third quarter of 2025, growth and rate recovery contributed $0.09 of favorability, driven by a full quarter of updated rates from interim filings effective in June. Weather and usage contributed another $0.03 of favorability due to hotter weather and higher usage across the Texas and Indiana service territories.
- Regulatory Recovery ProgressAt Houston Electric, interim rates were approved for a $73 million distribution capital tracker revenue requirement increase, with a final order expected this month. A transmission capital tracker final order approved a $29 million revenue requirement increase, which is now reflected in customer rates. Management said nearly all of the capital additions announced are covered by existing capital tracker mechanisms and that more than 80% of recoveries across its states come through such mechanisms.
- Additional Regulatory Actions Supporting Service and AffordabilityCenterPoint expects to file a three-year forward-looking Minnesota gas rate case covering pipeline and gas meter replacement and safer, more reliable service. It also plans to file a combined North and South Indiana gas rate case in December, which management expects to result in a bill decrease for a significant number of residential customers.
- Flat Houston Electric Rates Since 2014Management stated that Houston Electric has maintained effectively flat rates since 2014, in large part because of incremental customer and economic growth.
- Transmission Expansion PlansThe transmission projects announced in the current plan are lower-voltage 345 kV and 138 kV projects. CenterPoint plans to file for 765 kV transmission in the first half of next year and said it will work proactively with landowners and stakeholders on routes and responsible development.
- Capital Execution and Financing CompletionCenterPoint invested $4.1 billion through the third quarter of 2026 and completed its financing needs for the year. Full-year capital investment is expected to be modestly below the $6.8 billion target solely because of project timing, with the delayed investment expected to be recovered in the first quarter of 2027.
