Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive overall. Management reported year-to-date earnings growth, higher investment deployment, improving reliability, robust industrial and data center demand, expanding transmission opportunities, and reaffirmed 2026 and long-term earnings objectives. The main challenges were pending regulatory approvals, the later timing of additional West Virginia generation, unresolved rate-case matters, and the equity or equity-like financing required for incremental investment.
FirstEnergy reaffirmed its 2026 Core EPS guidance range of $2.62 to $2.82 per share and expects to be at or slightly above the midpoint, with core earnings growth near the top end of its 6%-8% range through 2030; it expects an order on the Maidsville CPCN in the fourth quarter, has reserved turbines for delivery in 2030, expects an update on the initial 3 GW RFP in early 2027, and expects the 3 GW’s longer-term solutions in the 2031, 2032 and beyond timeframe. The company expects at least a 25% increase in its current $19 billion transmission investment plan, will provide its updated 2027 through 2031 capital investment and financial outlook on the fourth quarter earnings call in February, and expects additional investments to be funded with up to 35% equity or equity-like securities; its current five-year $36 billion investment plan includes up to $2 billion of equity or equity-like securities through 2030, while common equity is expected to be 1% of market cap on an annual basis for the foreseeable future. It expects New Jersey rates to remain approximately 18% below the state average for investor-owned utilities even with the proposed increase, and expects a regulatory outcome on New Jersey’s review later this year or early next year.
- Strong Third-Quarter Earnings PerformanceGAAP earnings were $0.96 per share versus $0.76 in the third quarter of 2025. Core earnings were $0.98 per share versus $0.83 a year ago, reflecting growth from rates and investment programs, increasing customer demand, strong financial discipline, and a slightly lower effective tax rate.
- Year-to-Date Core EPS GrowthThrough the first nine months of 2026, Core EPS increased 9% to $2.20 per share from $2.02 in the same period last year.
- Significant Electric-System Investment DeploymentFirstEnergy deployed $4.9 billion through September to strengthen its electric system, a 23% increase from the same period of 2025.
- Returns and Rate-Base Growth in Line with PlanTrailing 12-month consolidated return on equity was 9.5%, in line with targeted returns. FirstEnergy-level rate base growth was 9.9%, supported by total transmission rate base growth of 14% and integrated transmission business growth of 21%.
- Positive Customer Demand TrendsTotal weather-adjusted load increased 1.2% in the third quarter and was positive in each of the last four quarters. Industrial load increased 3.3% in the quarter and 2.1% over the last 12 months, with strength across metals, oil and gas, chemicals, manufacturing, and data centers.
- Data Center Demand ExpansionContracted and pipelined data center demand increased nearly 60% since year-end, including a 90% increase in contracted demand. Across FirstEnergy's footprint, contracted data center demand reached 7.9 GW, with approximately 4 GW of additional load in active negotiations.
- Large West Virginia Demand PipelineWest Virginia pipeline demand increased approximately six times to nearly 6 GW. FirstEnergy is in active negotiations with large-load customers and has issued a request for proposal for an initial 3 GW of additional combined-cycle turbines.
- Maidsville Project ProgressFirstEnergy expects a West Virginia Public Service Commission order on the proposed Maidsville Energy Generating Facility in the fourth quarter and has reserved Siemens turbines for delivery in 2030 to protect the project schedule.
- Bridge Power Solutions Under DevelopmentTo provide faster power to large-load customers before permanent grid-integrated generation is available, FirstEnergy is exploring batteries, fuel cells, reciprocating engines, and other temporary behind-the-meter solutions. The company said these bridge assets could be reused for multiple locations.
- Transmission Investment OpportunityFirstEnergy expects its current $19 billion transmission investment plan to increase by at least 25% when it releases its updated five-year plan. The company said the increase reflects the need to support data center demand and a more flexible, resilient, and reliable regional grid.
- Reliability Improvements Across the FootprintSince 2024, reliability improved 11% in Pennsylvania and 40% in New Jersey. In New Jersey, reliability improved 16% in 2025 and another 22% year over year through September 2026.
- 2026 Earnings Guidance ReaffirmedFirstEnergy reaffirmed its 2026 Core EPS guidance range of $2.62 to $2.82 per share and expects to be at or slightly above the midpoint.
- Long-Term Earnings Growth Target MaintainedThe company remains on track to deliver core earnings growth near the top end of its 6%-8% range through 2030 and said it has meaningful opportunities to increase earnings growth over time.
- Financing Plan Completed for 2026 Subsidiary DebtFirstEnergy completed its subsidiary debt financings for the year, issuing $2.6 billion at an average coupon of 4.7%. Approximately 50% of total long-term debt financing needs are supported by formula rate mechanisms that recover interest costs.
- Competitive Transmission Track RecordSince 2022, FirstEnergy has been awarded more than $5 billion of competitive transmission investments through PJM's Open Window process, including joint ventures involving projects that cross state boundaries.
- New Jersey Rate Case and Affordability PositionFirstEnergy filed a New Jersey base rate case requesting a $253 million increase, reflecting approximately $1 billion of rate-base growth since February 2024. The company proposed delaying the impact of any rate increase until 2028 and expects rates to remain approximately 18% below the state average for investor-owned utilities.
- West Virginia Rate Case ApprovalThe West Virginia commission approved FirstEnergy's $76 million inflation and investment adjustment filing as submitted. The first rate increase took effect August 1, 2026, with a second increase scheduled for June 1, 2027, and the order provides for a stay out through April 2028.
- Broad Regulatory and Strategic ProgressManagement said it had made solid progress on regulatory and strategic priorities, including its New Jersey and Maryland rate cases, West Virginia generation opportunities, and additional PJM transmission solutions expected to be awarded in the first quarter of next year.
- Constructive West Virginia Business EnvironmentManagement said West Virginia's legislative and regulatory environment is driving economic development, jobs, and business opportunities, and that discussions with large-load customers are constructive regarding delivery schedules, pricing, risk mitigation, and benefits to communities and existing customers.
