Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive. DuPont exceeded third-quarter guidance, raised full-year sales, EBITDA, and EPS expectations, delivered broad-based organic growth, expanded margins, generated strong cash flow, and highlighted substantial productivity, innovation, AI, aerospace, healthcare, water, and EV battery opportunities. The principal challenges were Middle East project delays, currency and oil-and-gas-related headwinds, weakness in construction and automotive markets, and operational metrics such as OTIF that remain below target, but management stated that pricing and productivity actions were offsetting key cost pressures.
For full year 2026, DuPont expects organic growth to be approximately 4.5%, sales to be about $7.19 billion, operating EBITDA of $1.785 billion, operating EBITDA growth of about 40% incremental, operating EBITDA margin of 24.8%, an 80 basis point improvement year-over-year, adjusted EPS at the midpoint of $7.50, a $0.25 increase versus prior guidance and a 22% increase compared to the prior year pro forma, and full-year free cash flow conversion of approximately 100% versus its 90% target; pricing is now closer to $110 million versus the $90 million previously discussed, and the guidance assumes large water projects in the Middle East will be pushed into 2027. For the fourth quarter, net sales are estimated at $1.825 billion with organic growth of about 8% year-over-year and currency neutral, operating EBITDA is expected to be $455 million with a 24.9% margin, adjusted EPS is expected to be in the range of $1.90 to $1.95 per share, representing an increase of 17%-19% compared to the prior year pro forma, and organic sales growth is expected to be in the high single digits percent range for both Healthcare & Water Technologies and Diversified Industrials.
- Third-Quarter Results Exceeded GuidanceDuPont reported broad-based sales growth and continued productivity improvements, delivering 5% organic growth, 90 basis points of margin expansion, 31% adjusted EPS growth, and robust free cash flow conversion in the quarter.
- Net Sales and Organic Growth IncreasedThird-quarter net sales were $1.9 billion, up 4% versus the year-ago period, including 5% organic sales growth partially offset by a 1% currency headwind.
- Operating EBITDA and Margin ExpandedThird-quarter operating EBITDA was $469 million, up 8% year over year, while operating EBITDA margin increased 90 basis points to 25.1%, driven by organic sales growth and productivity.
- Strong Free Cash Flow ConversionTransaction-adjusted free cash flow was $341 million with 121% conversion in the quarter. DuPont now expects full-year free cash flow conversion to be approximately 100%, ahead of its 90% target.
- Adjusted EPS GrowthThird-quarter adjusted EPS was $2.09, up 31% year over year. Stronger operations, higher cash, capital allocation, and actions to lower the tax rate drove 24% of the increase.
- Full-Year 2026 Guidance RaisedDuPont raised full-year 2026 guidance for organic sales growth, operating EBITDA, and adjusted EPS, with all metrics at or above the high end of the prior ranges. Organic sales growth is expected to be approximately 4.5%, sales about $7.19 billion, operating EBITDA $1.785 billion, and adjusted EPS at the midpoint of $7.50, representing a 22% increase versus the prior-year pro forma.
- Fourth-Quarter Outlook Indicates Continued GrowthFourth-quarter net sales are expected to be $1.825 billion, with organic growth of about 8% year over year. Operating EBITDA is expected to be $455 million with a 24.9% margin, and adjusted EPS is expected to be $1.90 to $1.95, up 17%-19% versus the prior-year pro forma.
- Broad-Based Segment PerformanceHealthcare & Water Technologies organic sales grew 4%, while Diversified Industrials organic sales grew 5%. Healthcare and aerospace remained strong, and Building Technologies grew on gains in North America and Asia.
- Healthcare & Water Technologies ResultsHealthcare & Water Technologies sales were $865 million, up 4% year over year on 4% organic growth. Segment operating EBITDA was $263 million, up 7%, and margin increased 80 basis points to 30.4%. Healthcare sales grew mid-single digits organically, led by double-digit gains in personal protection and medical packaging.
- Diversified Industrials ResultsDiversified Industrials sales were $1 billion, up 4% year over year on 5% organic growth, partially offset by a 1% currency headwind. Segment operating EBITDA increased 11% to $242 million, and margin expanded 140 basis points to 24.1%.
- Building Technologies Outperformed Its MarketBuilding Technologies organic sales grew mid-single digits, supported by North America and Asia. The business benefited from share gains in building envelopes, more conversions to Tyvek among national and large regional builders, increased multifamily penetration, favorable mix, and pricing. Management said the overall market was down low single digits while the business was expected to be relatively flat on volume.
- Aerospace Delivered Double-Digit GrowthAerospace is approximately $300 million, or 3% of revenue, and is growing in the low double-digit range. Vespel and Tedlar were each described as delivering similar low double-digit growth, with a sizable backlog, strong OEM relationships, and more visibility than many other businesses.
- EV Battery Sales Increased Approximately 60%EV battery sales increased about 60% in 2026 and are expected to continue growing sizably faster than EV battery vehicle build numbers. The opportunity is broad-based, while DuPont's China auto exposure is weighted more toward multinational players than local manufacturers.
- Water Semiconductor Business Grew About 20%The semiconductor portion of the water business grew in the 20% range in the quarter, driven by the AI data center lift. Wastewater treatment, specialty markets such as food and beverage and biopharma filtration, and other water end markets were also described as performing well outside the Middle East desalination situation.
- Innovation Pipeline and Portfolio ImprovedDuPont substantially increased its front-end innovation pipeline and improved the grow-versus-renew ratio of its innovation portfolio by about 5%, while maintaining a vitality index in the mid-30% range. The company is targeting a similar vitality index to last year's approximately 35% level.
- Innovation Portfolio Shifted Toward GrowthThe current innovation mix is approximately 60% replace and 40% growth, with a goal of moving closer to a 50/50 mix. DuPont moved more R&D investment into growth initiatives during the quarter and said innovation is contributing to both growth and margin improvement.
- AI Accelerated Innovation and Commercial ExecutionAI agents piloted in two businesses reduced the time to move projects from stage zero to stage one from about three months to roughly five days. AI-enabled sales plays generated roughly $5 million or $6 million of top-line lift in the Tyvek garment space, while AI tools are also being used in customer service, maintenance, visual inspection, and sales-force productivity. Every exempt worker has access to Copilot, and usage was described as very high.
- New Products and Customer WinsDuPont launched a bioprocessing purification technology aimed at peptide therapeutics, including GLP-1 drugs, and launched Tyvek with Renewable Attribution to support sustainable material sourcing and carbon-footprint reduction. The company also cited customer wins involving BETATECH thermal materials, Vespel aerospace seals, and the largest containerized desalination project in EMEA.
- Operational Excellence Generated ProductivityDuPont completed more than 20 Kaizen events during the quarter and delivered over 2% net productivity, which was a key component of margin expansion. Both major businesses achieved net productivity above 2% in the quarter.
- Productivity Program Has Additional RunwayDuPont is targeting net 3% productivity in COGS and said it is well on its way. The company expects a few million dollars of benefit this year from 80/20 work in Diversified Industrials, with a runway to tens of millions on an initial $700 million revenue scope, and has expanded the approach to the approximately $200 million MOLYKOTE business.
- Delivery Performance ImprovedOn-time-in-full performance improved by more than 100 basis points for the third consecutive quarter. The company is currently in the low 80s against an ultimate target of 95% on delivery to the requested date.
- Pricing Offset InflationOf the approximately $30 million third-quarter revenue beat versus guidance, about $10 million came from incremental price and $20 million from volume. Full-year pricing is now expected to be closer to $110 million versus the previously discussed $90 million, and DuPont said it is offsetting inflation on a dollar basis.
- Share Repurchases and Capital AllocationDuPont completed a previously announced $250 million accelerated share repurchase and substantially completed an additional $100 million of open-market purchases in the quarter. It plans to repurchase another $250 million of shares in the fourth quarter. Management said approximately 7% of shares have been targeted for repurchase since the separation, while about $1.5 billion of financial capacity remains for accretive growth M&A.
- Balance Sheet Flexibility and M&A PipelineManagement described the M&A pipeline as robust and said DuPont has enough cash to pursue both acquisitions and share repurchases. Net debt to EBITDA was 1.1x, and the company is applying defined financial parameters while remaining disciplined and unwilling to complete a deal merely to do a deal.
- Sales Compensation Model Is Being ChangedDuPont plans to move to commission-based sales compensation on January 1, with limited European exceptions due to works council requirements. Management said initial feedback from the sales organization has been positive and that the pilot has provided targets for determining individual performance factors.
- Positive Medium-Term PositioningManagement stated that 2026 performance is above the high end of all medium-term targets established at Investor Day for growth, margin expansion, EPS, and free cash flow generation. DuPont expects 2027 end markets to be generally similar to 2026, with slight improvement in automotive, continued mid-single-digit growth in healthcare and water excluding the Middle East, and continued productivity-driven margin expansion.
- Healthcare and Water Growth OpportunitiesWithin Tyvek, garments are expected to grow generally 2%-3% alongside industrial production, while medical packaging is expected to grow in the 5%-ish range alongside surgical procedures. Overall net Tyvek volume is expected to approach 4%, with additional above-market growth from business investments.
