Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary
The call was strongly positive. CDW delivered record quarterly performance with 18% sales growth, double-digit growth across major product categories, significant operating leverage, healthy backlog and written demand, and raised full-year guidance. The main challenges were lower gross margin, modest services growth tied to deployment timing, declining client device unit volumes, higher interest expense, and year-to-date cash conversion below the long-term target range, but these issues did not outweigh the company's broad-based growth and improved outlook.
For full year 2026, CDW now expects the U.S. IT addressable market to grow at a high single-digit rate on a customer spend basis, with 300-400 basis points of CDW outperformance compared to the market; gross profit to grow at a mid to high single-digit rate, with a first half versus second half split in the range of 48%-52%, while full year 2026 gross margin is expected to be down compared to the full year 2025; net interest expense is expected in the range of $255 million-$260 million; non-GAAP net income per diluted share growth is expected to be in the low double-digit range year over year; and currency is expected to be relatively neutral to reported growth rates for the full year. For the fourth quarter, gross profit is expected to increase at a mid-single-digit rate year over year, equivalent to a seasonal low to mid-single-digit decline sequentially, non-GAAP SG&A is expected to increase at a low single-digit rate year-over-year and sequentially, and non-GAAP net income per diluted share is expected to increase at a low double-digit rate year over year.
- Record Quarterly Sales and Strong Profit GrowthThird-quarter net sales increased 18% to $6.8 billion, gross profit increased 10% to $1.4 billion, and non-GAAP operating income increased 17% to approximately $620 million. Non-GAAP net income was $410 million, up 14.8% year over year, while non-GAAP net income per diluted share increased 20.4% to $3.26.
- Broad-Based End-Market GrowthTop-line growth was broad-based across customer segments: commercial increased 21%, international increased 26%, government increased 10%, and education increased 8%. Growth reflected customer investments in modernization, resilience, efficiency, security, AI readiness, and more capable devices.
- Hardware and Software Delivered Double-Digit GrowthHardware increased 21%, driven by modernization and AI-related investment from foundational infrastructure to AI factory deployments. Software increased 14%, with double-digit growth across network management, virtualization, and operating systems. Data storage and servers more than doubled, NetComm increased 9%, and client devices increased 19%.
- Strong AI and Infrastructure DemandDemand was strongest in AI-driven hybrid infrastructure and data center modernization, particularly servers, storage, and cloud. Management cited durable customer priorities including AI readiness, data growth, network modernization, cybersecurity, resiliency, and hybrid architectures.
- Cloud and Netted-Down Revenue MomentumCloud delivered stellar growth across SaaS and IaaS solutions. Netted-down revenue streams increased 17.1% year over year, accelerated from the second quarter, and represented a record 38.2% of gross profit, up 220 basis points year over year and 230 basis points quarter over quarter.
- Operating Leverage and Expense EfficiencyNon-GAAP SG&A increased 5.6% year over year to $766 million, while SG&A as a percentage of gross profit improved 240 basis points year over year and 260 basis points sequentially to 55.3%. Management said Geared for Growth savings were at or above expectations and contributed to the quarter's operating leverage.
- Strong Free Cash Flow GenerationAdjusted free cash flow was $506 million in the quarter, equal to 123% of non-GAAP net income, driven by profit growth and disciplined working capital management. Third-quarter cash conversion was supported by a three-month average cash conversion cycle of 20 days, within the targeted range of high teens to low 20s.
- Healthy Demand, Orders, and BacklogCustomer engagement and written demand remained healthy, with written orders continuing to outpace invoicing and backlog building, particularly in enterprise infrastructure. Management said visibility continued to improve, order times and delivery were largely within reason, and stronger written orders replenished converted backlog.
- Raised Full-Year Growth OutlookCDW increased its full-year 2026 outlook. The company now expects the U.S. IT addressable market to grow at a high single-digit rate, with 300-400 basis points of CDW outperformance. Full-year gross profit growth is now expected at a mid to high single-digit rate, up from the prior expectation of mid-single digits, and non-GAAP net income per diluted share growth is now expected in the low double-digit range, up from high single-digit growth.
- Positive Fourth-Quarter ExpectationsFor the fourth quarter, management expects gross profit to increase at a mid-single-digit rate year over year, non-GAAP SG&A to increase at a low single-digit rate, operating expense as a percentage of gross profit to improve year over year, and non-GAAP net income per diluted share to increase at a low double-digit rate.
- Lovelytics Acquisition Expands AI and Data CapabilitiesCDW completed the $525 million acquisition of Lovelytics on September 25. The acquisition expands modern cloud, data, analytics, and AI services capabilities. Management said Lovelytics has richer gross margins as a professional services business and will be integrated through a measured approach, with Q4 contribution incorporated into the outlook.
- AI Solution Demonstrated Commercial PotentialCDW described an airport solution combining AI, computer vision, LiDAR, telemetry, machine learning, and advanced infrastructure to monitor terminal transportation systems and identify potential issues before disruptions. Related production monitoring and cloud analytics opportunities totaled about $2 million, and CDW said the AI IoT solution is extensible across transportation, water, and power infrastructure.
- Continued Investment in Capabilities and AIThe company continued investing in coworkers, industry specialization, services capabilities, data and AI practice areas, customer-facing capabilities, and AI infrastructure. Management also said it is investing in quote-to-cash improvements, customer experience, and repeatable solutions while using Geared for Growth to create durable capacity for reinvestment and shareholder returns.
- Shareholder Returns and Dividend IncreaseCDW returned $108 million through share repurchases and $79 million through dividends during the quarter. Year to date, it returned approximately $892 million to shareholders, including $653 million of share repurchases and 5.3 million shares repurchased at an average price of approximately $123 per share. The quarterly dividend increased approximately 8% to $0.68 per share, or $2.72 annually, marking the 13th consecutive annual increase.
- Balance Sheet and Liquidity PositionCDW ended the quarter with $5.6 billion of net debt, $3.4 billion of liquidity including cash and revolver availability, and net leverage of 2.5x, within the targeted range of 2x-3x. The company issued $1.5 billion of senior notes to repay $1 billion of December 2026 senior notes at maturity and fund the remainder of the Lovelytics acquisition.
