Q3 2026 Earnings Call Summary

Q3 2026
Earnings Call Date:Nov 05, 2026|% Change Since:―|
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive

The call was broadly positive: the company delivered record revenue, sustained double-digit commercial growth, improved multifamily performance, executed acquisitions, maintained strong liquidity, and demonstrated successful spray foam pricing. These strengths outweighed the stated challenges, although management highlighted meaningful pressure from weak single-family and multifamily markets, difficult comparisons, higher aluminum, fuel and freight costs, and expected gross-margin pressure.

Company Guidance

Management expects at least $100 million of acquired annual revenue for the full year, fourth quarter and full year 2026 amortization expense of approximately $10 million and $42 million, respectively, and an effective tax rate of 25%-27% for the full year ending December 31st, 2026; fourth quarter net interest expense is expected to be approximately $15 million. For 2027, the current expectation is that both single family and multifamily starts are down mid-single digits in the year, while full-year gross margin can stay within the 32%-34% range but will clearly be at the low end of the range, and “we’re not going to go at 34%.” Other segment revenue growth is expected to be more similar to third-quarter same-branch sales growth, which was mid-single digits; fiberglass and spray foam pricing are expected to have stability for the next couple of quarters, unless the on-the-ground macro condition for new residential construction changes; and multifamily softness is expected to start showing up in the fourth quarter and certainly the first half of 2027.

  • Record Quarterly RevenueThird quarter consolidated revenue reached a record $808 million, up 4% from $778 million in the prior-year period, driven by the commercial, multifamily, and other segments as well as recent acquisitions.
  • Diversified Platform ResiliencyManagement said the company continued to outperform broader housing market trends despite soft single-family demand, demonstrating the benefits of its diversified platform and multiple avenues for growth across varying market conditions.
  • Commercial Growth and Backlog StrengthCommercial installation sales grew double digits for the sixth consecutive quarter, with heavy commercial sales growth exceeding 13%. Heavy commercial backlog was up mid-teens from already high record levels, and the pipeline was described as robust, with confirmed backlog that is mostly funded.
  • Multifamily Sales and Backlog ImprovementMultifamily sales increased 8% during the quarter, multifamily same-branch sales rose 8%, and the contract backlog continued to grow. Management said multifamily revenue was solid across nearly all regions.
  • Other Segment GrowthOther segment revenue increased 19% net of eliminations during the quarter and was up 33% year to date. Management said the segment's fourth-quarter growth rate is expected to be more similar to its third-quarter same-branch sales growth, which was mid-single digits.
  • Positive Same-Branch Sales and Market Share GainsConsolidated same-branch sales were slightly positive, while installation same-branch sales increased 0.3%. A 10% increase in commercial same-branch sales and an 8% increase in multifamily same-branch sales offset a 5% decline in new single-family same-branch sales.
  • Acquisition ExecutionThe company completed four acquisitions during the quarter representing approximately $22 million in annual revenue. The acquired businesses cover shower doors, closet shelving, mirrors, accessories, door and bath hardware, fencing hardware, fireplaces, insulation, and gutters across multiple U.S. states.
  • Full-Year Acquisition PipelineThe acquisition pipeline supports management's expectation of at least $100 million of acquired annual revenue for the full year. Management described the pipeline as very robust and said it includes both traditional insulation installers and complementary-product businesses.
  • Core Insulation Margin Stability in the QuarterThird-quarter adjusted gross profit margin was 32%. Management said insulation product margin was essentially flat year over year, illustrating that the core business was performing, despite pressure from aluminum, fuel, freight, and mix.
  • Spray Foam Pricing ExecutionThe team maintained spray foam margin throughout the quarter after a significant 20%+ price increase. Management attributed the result to advance communication of the increase, forward pricing, the semi-custom and custom-home customer base, and discipline within the spray foam contractor base.
  • Heavy Commercial Vertical StrengthWithin heavy commercial, recreational and entertainment, industrial and manufacturing, retail, and lodging and hotel were described as strong or solid growth contributors. Retail was growing significantly from a backlog perspective, although it represented a small portion of overall revenue.
  • Geographic OutperformanceGeorgia, Minnesota, Ohio, South Carolina, and Wisconsin delivered particularly strong results, with some states up double digits. California and Florida stabilized during the quarter, which management viewed positively.
  • Multifamily Market Share OpportunityCQ's success in the South Census region is expanding into the West and Mid-Atlantic regions. Management estimated that the company has over 50% multifamily market share in the South Census region and said its share in other census regions is considerably lower, providing substantial opportunity to increase market share.
  • Mechanical Industrial Insulation PerformanceThe company has approximately $50 million of revenue in mechanical industrial insulation, and management said that part of the business is doing well. The market was described as having significant activity, with product largely on allocation and price appreciation occurring.
  • Strong Liquidity and Acquisition CapacityThe company ended the quarter with $416 million of cash and stated that it had over $1 billion of liquidity when including cash and availability under its ABL facility. Management raised $250 million through an add-on to its existing Term Loan B, increasing the total to approximately $740 million, while maintaining leverage below 2x and no near-term maturities.
  • Capital Returns and Dividend IncreaseThe company had approximately $398 million available under its stock repurchase program and expects positive free cash flow to continue supporting shareholder returns and stock buybacks. The board approved a fourth-quarter dividend of $0.39 per share, representing a more than 5% increase over the prior-year period.
  • Stable Competitive EnvironmentManagement said the bidding and negotiating process with home builders had not changed materially, and that the company's largest competitor remained disciplined with no notable changes in field behavior.
  • Labor and Service DifferentiationManagement said labor scarcity among trades preceding installation extends cycle times, but the soft environment has prevented significant cycle-time extensions. The company said its employee-based installation labor supports consistent execution, including showing up on time, completing work correctly the first time, and passing inspection.
  • Pricing Stability Expectations for Key ProductsManagement expects stability in fiberglass and spray foam pricing for at least the next couple of quarters, with any changes expected to be very modest unless on-the-ground macro conditions for new residential construction change.
  • Material Availability Supported by Manufacturer RelationshipsManagement said strong relationships with manufacturers were helping provide sufficient material for mechanical, industrial, and heavy commercial needs. Heavy commercial materials were described as generally readily available because the business is more fireproofing, fire stopping, and waterproofing intensive than insulation intensive.
