Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Recurring Contracted RevenueFee-based, regulated and contracted transportation creates recurring infrastructure revenue with less direct commodity-price exposure. This model can support earnings visibility and resilience across gas and crude cycles, provided contracted and tariff frameworks remain in place.
Strong Profitability And Cash FlowStrong margins and improved cash generation show substantial operating earnings capacity: TTM net margin is about 22%, operating cash flow about $8.6B, and free cash flow about $4.1B. That supports reinvestment and financial resilience.
LNG-linked Growth ProjectCoastal GasLink Phase 2 adds a structurally backed growth avenue after LNG Canada’s expansion FID. Nearly doubling capacity on an existing route can deepen TC Energy’s role in LNG-linked gas transportation, with construction expected from 2027 and service in the early 2030s.
Bears Say
Elevated LeverageDebt at roughly 2.2x equity in both 2025 and TTM is a persistent constraint on financial flexibility. Elevated leverage can limit internally funded growth and increase sensitivity to refinancing costs, especially as the company contemplates a larger investment program.
Uneven Free Cash Flow ConversionFree cash flow improved to about $4.1B TTM, but it was negative in 2022–2023 and equals only about 44% of TTM net income. This uneven conversion suggests capital intensity or working-capital demands can still disrupt funding capacity and earnings quality.
Backlog Timing And Funding RiskThe $20B-plus origination backlog is heavily weighted beyond 2030, while management expects a major 2029–2031 investment ramp that may require hybrids, partnerships, equity or other capital. Delayed FIDs and funding choices could defer cash generation and increase execution complexity.

Company Description
TC Energy
TC Energy Corporation functions as a leading energy infrastructure enterprise across North America. Its comprehensive operations are organized into five primary divisions: Canadian Natural Gas Pipelines, U.S. Natural Gas Pipelines, Mexico Natural Gas Pipelines, Liquids Pipelines, and Power and Storage. The company boasts an extensive 93,300 km natural gas pipeline network designed to move natural gas from its source basins to various destinations such as local distribution companies, electricity generation plants, industrial complexes, inter-pipeline connections, and LNG export terminals. This infrastructure is supported by regulated natural gas storage facilities with a total working gas capacity of 535 billion cubic feet, alongside 118 billion cubic feet of non-regulated natural gas storage capacity situated in Alberta. In addition to gas, TC Energy manages a significant 4,900 km liquids pipeline system. This system is vital for transporting crude oil originating from Alberta to key refining markets in Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas, and the U.S. Gulf Coast. Furthermore, the company either owns or holds interests in seven power generation facilities. These plants collectively provide approximately 4,300 megawatts of power, utilizing both natural gas and nuclear fuel sources, and are located in Alberta, Ontario, Québec, and New Brunswick. Originally incorporated in 1951, the company was known as TransCanada Corporation until it adopted the name TC Energy Corporation in May 2019. Its corporate headquarters are located in Calgary, Canada.

TRPN Earnings Call
Q2 2026
0:00 / 0:00
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call emphasized strong operational execution, solid 2Q financial results (12% comparable EBITDA growth), active project sanctioning (~$3B YTD) and a materially expanded origination pipeline (> $20B) supported by rising gas demand forecasts (51 Bcf/day by 2035). Key strengths include Bruce Power outperformance, upward guidance confidence, sustainability progress and secured equipment/contractor strategies. Principal risks highlighted were timing and funding of a large late‑decade investment ramp, dynamic FID timing for the origination backlog, and the need to finalize regulatory/return frameworks in Canada. On balance, the positive operational and commercial momentum significantly outweighs the risks, which management is actively addressing.View all MX:TRPN earnings summariesTRPN Stock 12 Month Forecast
