Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Strong Cash Generation
WM generates substantial and growing cash from its recurring waste services, supporting reinvestment, acquisitions, dividends and repurchases. Operating cash flow rose steadily through the period, while positive free cash flow provides financial capacity to fund the business and sustain shareholder returns.
Pricing And Margin Discipline
Disciplined pricing and cost control are helping WM protect profitability even when operating expenses rise. The combination of positive price-to-cost spread, improving SG&A and technology-enabled efficiency supports durable margin resilience across its collection and disposal operations.
Diversified Growth Platforms
WM is expanding beyond traditional waste collection through renewable energy, recycling, sustainability and health care services. Growth in these platforms broadens the earnings base, while contracted renewable production improves visibility and reduces exposure to commodity-price volatility.
Bears Say
Leverage-heavy Balance Sheet
Rising debt increases WM’s fixed financial commitments and can reduce flexibility for acquisitions, capital investment or shareholder returns. Although profitability supports the current structure, higher leverage leaves the company more exposed to refinancing, interest-rate and operating downturn risks.
Persistent Volume Weakness
Negative collection and disposal volumes constrain organic growth because WM’s infrastructure and routes require sufficient waste throughput to operate efficiently. Continued weakness in housing, construction and customer retention could limit revenue growth even when pricing remains strong.
Regulatory And Operating Cost Pressure
Higher landfill compliance and monitoring costs can weigh on margins and require additional capital or operating spending over time. PFAS regulation adds uncertainty because future requirements are not fully formulated, potentially increasing the cost of owning and operating disposal assets.

0LTG Earnings Call
Earnings Call SentimentPositive
The call was strongly positive overall. WM reported broad-based revenue, EBITDA and free cash flow growth, maintained its full-year outlook, achieved health care pricing and cost targets ahead of schedule, expanded its sustainability businesses and continued returning capital to shareholders. The main challenges were negative volumes, elevated fuel and risk management costs, ongoing health care churn, lower RNG production and regulatory or landfill cost pressures, but management described these issues as manageable and emphasized improving trends and strong execution.
