Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Vertical IntegrationOwning iron-ore mining through downstream finishing gives Cleveland-Cliffs structural cost and supply advantages. Vertical integration reduces reliance on third-party inputs, helps stabilize internal feedstock availability and margins across cycles, and supports recovery when pricing improves.
Clear EBITDA Ramp & GuidanceManagement provided quantified near-term EBITDA uplift and a multi-quarter improvement trajectory, implying operational leverage and margin recovery if realized. Sustained higher EBITDA materially improves cash flow, accelerates deleveraging, and funds reinvestment or restructuring over the coming 6–12 months.
Automotive Demand RecoveryStrengthening automotive volumes and supplier recognition signal durable, higher-value end-market demand. Automotive contracts often carry higher mix, engineering content, and recurring volumes, which can sustain utilization, reduce revenue volatility, and support longer-term margin uplift versus pure commodity exposures.
Bears Say
Elevated LeverageLeverage at ~1.37x equity combined with negative returns on equity increases financial rigidity for a cyclical steel producer. If a downturn or slower-than-expected margin recovery occurs, higher debt amplifies liquidity and refinancing risk and constrains strategic optionality including capex and M&A for multiple quarters.
Negative Cash GenerationRecent TTM cash-flow deficits show the business consuming cash despite cyclic revenue gains. Persistent negative OCF/FCF forces reliance on debt, asset sales, or equity, limiting ability to fund capex, return capital, or absorb shocks and making deleveraging contingent on successful EBITDA conversion and transaction execution.
Dependence On Pricing, Asset Sales & PolicyMaterial parts of the recovery plan rely on HRC price moves, successful monetization of property/assets, and sustained trade/OEM policy support. These external dependencies create execution risk: adverse price curves, delayed or low-priced asset sales, or policy shifts could materially slow deleveraging and cash-generation timelines.

Company Description
Cleveland-Cliffs
Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. stands as a prominent North American manufacturer specializing in flat-rolled steel. The company's diverse product portfolio encompasses a wide array of carbon steel forms, including hot-rolled, cold-rolled, electrogalvanized, hot-dip galvanized, hot-dip galvannealed, aluminized, enameling, and advanced high-strength steel. Additionally, they supply stainless steel, various steel plates, and specialized electrical steels (both grain-oriented and non-oriented). Beyond these core offerings, Cleveland-Cliffs produces tubular components, fabricated from carbon steel, stainless steel, and via electric resistance welding. Their tinplate division manufactures electrolytic tin-coated and chrome-coated sheets, alongside other tin mill products. The company also provides essential raw materials, ingots, rolled and cast blooms, hot-briquetted iron, and services like tooling and sampling. A key aspect of its operations is vertical integration, as the company owns and manages five iron ore mines located in Minnesota and Michigan. Cleveland-Cliffs serves a broad customer base, including the automotive industry, infrastructure and general manufacturing sectors, distributors, converters, and other steel producers. Founded in 1847, the company is headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, and officially adopted the name Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. in August 2017, having previously been known as Cliffs Natural Resources Inc.

CVA Earnings Call
Q2 2026
0:00 / 0:00
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call presented a marked operational and financial improvement with a clear path to materially higher EBITDA, positive free cash flow, and a near-term leverage reduction target. Key positives include Q2 adjusted EBITDA of $286M, a strong Q3 guide of $575M, price gains (+$76/ton in Q2, +$55/ton expected in Q3), a $400M property-sale pipeline, and a potential $500M EBITDA boost from contract resets. Offsetting risks are manageable near-term headwinds from Q2 maintenance outages and inventory lag, Canadian finishing-line pressures, valuation gaps in asset-sale processes, and reliance on trade policy and OEM decisions for capacity restarts. Overall, the positive operational momentum and sizable quantified upside outweigh the contained lowlights.View all DE:CVA earnings summariesCVA Revenue Breakdown
