Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Rate-base Growth & Capital ProgramA sustained $4B capex program targeted at regulated assets drives durable rate-base expansion. In regulated utilities, rising rate base converts directly to allowed returns over time, supporting predictable, compounding revenue and earnings growth as new infrastructure is placed into service.
Balance-sheet Repair Via Asset SaleProceeds earmarked to reduce holding-company debt materially improve structural leverage and CFO-to-debt metrics. This reduces funding costs and refinancing risk, strengthens credit metrics (Moody’s outlook to stable) and meaningfully increases financial flexibility over the medium term.
Stable Regulated ProfitabilityConsistent mid-teens margins and steady net income reflect regulatory cost recovery and diversified utility cash flows. The regulated business model yields predictable earnings drivers (rate cases, rate base growth), supporting multi-year stability despite cyclical commodity exposure in some segments.
Bears Say
Persistent Negative Free Cash FlowRecurring negative FCF signals ongoing reliance on external financing (debt, equity or asset sales) to fund capex and dividends. Over months, this limits the firm's ability to self-fund growth or rapidly de-lever, increasing sensitivity to funding markets and constraining strategic optionality.
Elevated And Rising LeverageHigh absolute debt and elevated leverage raise interest expense and reduce balance-sheet resiliency to shocks. Even with planned asset sales, sustained leverage constrains rating upside, increases cost of capital, and limits the pace at which the company can scale discretionary investments without further financing.
Revenue/margin Volatility And Rising CostsChoppy top-line trends and a weaker gross margin, coupled with increasing depreciation, O&M and interest expenses, indicate pressure on sustainable operating profitability. Structural margin compression reduces free cash generation and makes earnings less predictable across regulatory timing and commodity cycles.

Company Description
Emera
Emera Incorporated operates as an energy and services enterprise, primarily involved in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity, alongside the purchase, transport, distribution, and sale of natural gas through its diverse subsidiaries. The company structures its operations into segments such as Florida Electric Utility, Canadian Electric Utilities, Other Electric Utilities, and Gas Utilities and Infrastructure. Electricity generation draws from a broad spectrum of sources, including coal, natural gas/oil, hydro, wind, solar, petroleum coke, and biomass. Beyond core utility provisions, Emera also offers energy marketing, trading, and comprehensive asset management services. A notable asset is its 145-kilometer pipeline, which delivers re-gasified liquefied natural gas from Saint John, New Brunswick, to consumers in the northeastern United States. By December 31, 2021, Emera's electric utilities served approximately 810,600 customers in West Central Florida; 536,000 in Nova Scotia; 132,000 in Barbados; 19,000 in Grand Bahama Island; and 35,700 in Dominica. Its gas utilities and infrastructure operations concurrently catered to roughly 445,000 customers across Florida and 542,000 in New Mexico. Furthermore, the company extends insurance and reinsurance coverage to itself and its affiliates, complemented by financing services. Established in 1998, Emera is headquartered in Halifax, Canada.

C61 Earnings Call
Q2 2026
0:00 / 0:00
Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call highlighted meaningful strategic progress: approval and near-term close of the New Mexico Gas sale (USD 650M–700M expected), completed divestiture of Grand Bahama Power, an improving credit story with Moody's outlook moved to stable, solid YTD adjusted earnings ($627M) and an 8% increase in operating cash flow (ex working capital). Management emphasized active deployment of capital (>$1.7B in H1, ~$4B plan for 2026) and attractive growth opportunities (Florida population/economic growth, data-center prospects, Atlantic Canada transmission projects). Offsetting items included a Q2 EPS decline of $0.10 year-over-year, higher depreciation/O&M/interest costs across several segments, regulatory timing impacts in Canada and share-count and FX headwinds that reduced EPS modestly. On balance, the positives around balance sheet strengthening, strong capital execution, and stable-to-improving credit metrics modestly outweigh near-term cost and timing pressures.View all DE:C61 earnings summariesC61 Stock 12 Month Forecast
