Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Strong Used-vehicle Sales GrowthStrong comparable sales and unit growth indicate improving customer demand and effective execution in CarMax’s core used-vehicle retail model. Outperformance versus the described industry trend can support greater inventory throughput, operating leverage, and sustained revenue expansion over the next several quarters.
SG&A Leverage And Identified Cost SavingsLower selling, general and administrative expense per unit shows that CarMax is converting volume growth into better operating efficiency. The identified savings program provides a concrete path to offset cost pressure, strengthen earnings resilience, and improve profitability as sales scale.
Improving Extended Protection Plan EconomicsThe redesigned extended protection offering and new wheel, tire, and dent product are increasing per-vehicle contribution beyond the underlying vehicle sale. A national rollout expected by year-end could make this higher-margin service stream a more durable support for gross profit.
Bears Say
Thin And Inconsistent Operating ProfitabilityVery low net profitability leaves limited room to absorb weaker pricing, higher operating costs, or changes in demand. Repeatedly negative annual EBIT also suggests that recent improvement has not yet established a durable earnings base, limiting operating resilience over the medium term.
Elevated Leverage Constrains Financial FlexibilityHigh leverage increases the importance of maintaining reliable cash generation and limits flexibility to invest, withstand operating volatility, or return capital aggressively. The sharp decline in returns on equity further indicates that the balance sheet is supporting weaker earnings power than in prior periods.
Vehicle Margins And CAF Income Face PressureCarMax is supporting sales through more competitive pricing, but lower retail gross profit per unit directly pressures vehicle-level economics and management expects further declines in the next two quarters. Lower CAF penetration and expected income also weaken an important complementary profit stream.

Earnings Call Sentiment|Positive
The call was strongly positive, with substantial year-over-year growth in sales, comparable units, EPS, gross profit, CAF income, EPP margins, and SG&A productivity. Management also highlighted improved pricing competitiveness, resilient consumers, AI and digital initiatives, strategy execution, and the planned resumption of share repurchases. The main negatives were lower gross profit per unit, declining CAF penetration, an expectation for slightly lower FY2027 CAF income, upcoming pension and severance charges, higher transportation costs, and affordability pressure from elevated interest rates. Highlights significantly outweighed the lowlights.View all CH:XA4 earnings summariesXA4 Revenue Breakdown
