Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Cash GenerationOperating and free cash flow turned strongly positive across 2023–2025 with 2025 free cash flow up sharply (+137.3%). Durable cash generation strengthens the company’s ability to service debt, fund maintenance capex and support operating needs, which is critical given cyclical demand in resorts.
Operating ProfitabilityHigh 2025 EBIT (~21.5%) and EBITDA (~39.6%) margins reflect meaningful operating leverage at its resort assets. Sustained margins can support strong cash conversion and resilience through demand cycles, improving long-term earnings power if the company maintains cost discipline and occupancy trends recover.
Diversified Resort ModelMelco’s integrated-resort model spreads revenue across gaming and non-gaming streams (hotels, F&B, retail, entertainment). This structural diversification can stabilize revenues across cycles, reduce sole reliance on gaming, and capture broader tourist spending, supporting more durable cash flow profiles.
Bears Say
Extreme LeverageDebt-to-equity of roughly 31.2x in 2025 signals extremely high leverage, severely limiting financial flexibility. This capital structure raises refinancing, interest coverage, and default risk, and magnifies earnings volatility in a cyclical leisure and gaming industry where revenues can swing materially.
Revenue VolatilityA sharp -36.1% revenue decline in 2025 and prior net losses in 2023–2024 demonstrate pronounced top-line volatility. Unpredictable revenue undermines earnings visibility, complicates multi-year planning, and increases the risk that cash generation may prove insufficient to cover leverage during weaker tourism cycles.
Thin Equity / Balance-Sheet RiskThe company’s thin equity base and swings from strongly negative to positive ROE indicate a limited balance-sheet buffer. Low equity magnifies potential dilution or refinancing needs, restricts ability to absorb shocks, and increases vulnerability to rating actions or stricter lending terms in stressed market conditions.
