Over the weekend, the leaders of China, Russia, and India were pictured shaking hands at the Tianjin summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, pledging closer cooperation amid rising geopolitical trade pressures. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded “positive momentum” with China and stressed a friendly relationship with Russia as essential for global prosperity.
Tariff Stampede Strengthens Ties Between China, Russia, and India
Trump has issued steep tariffs against both China and India, two countries that have had a rocky relationship with each other in the past. He also raised India’s tariff rate as punishment for the country’s purchases of Russian oil.
Additionally, Trump has threatened secondary tariffs against Russia for its continued strikes on Ukraine, although he has yet to implement these policies as the U.S. works with European nations to end the war.
“President Trump’s gentle treatment of Vladimir Putin has done nothing to pull Russia away from China,” said Lowy Institute executive director Michael Fullilove. “His rough treatment of Narendra Modi, on the other hand, is pushing India closer to Russia and warming up its relations with China.”
