Trump Weighs Slashing $12 Billion in Clean Energy Funding

The Trump administration is considering pulling back $12 billion in clean energy funding for projects like carbon removal and clean hydrogen, according to Semafor. Last week, the administration canceled nearly $8 billion of funding for similar projects.

“If confirmed, the elimination of the megaton carbon removal projects will be a massive setback for American climate and industrial policy,” said Carbon180 Executive Director Erin Burns.

Trump Leverages Shutdown to Target Spending Cuts, Jobs

The news comes amid the seventh day of the government shutdown and is President Trump’s latest move to leverage the closure to influence spending decisions. Trump has also threatened that some furloughed federal workers will not receive backpay and that permanent federal job cuts will occur if the shutdown drags on.

Since May, the Trump administration has targeted nearly $24 billion in Department of Energy funding cuts, although the administration hasn’t fully implemented these reductions yet.
