“We discussed many things, but it was mostly focused on the Economy, and Trade, between our two Countries,” Trump said in a Truth Social post. “We will be having further discussions, and will get together in the not too distant future, both in Brazil and the United States.”

Lula Urges Trump to Roll Back Tariffs as Brazilian Exports Slide

During the call, Lula requested that Trump lower Brazil’s 50% tariff rate. Earlier this year, Trump increased Brazil’s tariff to 50% from 10% in light of the country’s criminal prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro over coup charges.

In September, Brazilian exports to the U.S. fell by 20.3% year-over-year, with items like beef and sugar seeing significant drops. The U.S. had a $6.8 billion trade surplus with Brazil in 2024, with Lula reminding Trump during the call that Brazil was one of three G20 countries with which the U.S. ran a surplus.
