“TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER NOW, END THE RIDICULOUS SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATELY, AND THEN, MOST IMPORTANTLY, PASS EVERY WONDERFUL REPUBLICAN POLICY THAT WE HAVE DREAMT OF, FOR YEARS, BUT NEVER GOTTEN,” Trump said in a Truth Social post.

What is the Filibuster Rule?

The filibuster is a Senate rule that requires most legislation to receive 60 votes out of 100 in order to pass, benefiting the minority party. Eliminating the filibuster would allow legislation to pass with a simple majority in a Republican-controlled Senate and could boost the odds of the government reopening.

However, ending the filibuster could be harmful for Republicans once they are in the minority again, leading many party members to resist Trump’s call. Republicans currently hold 53 seats in the Senate, meaning that they still need a handful of Democratic votes to reach the 60-vote threshold if the filibuster remains in place.
