President Trump’s approval rating dropped by 1% to 40% for the five days ending October 7, matching a term low, according to a poll conducted by Reuters and Ipsos. Trump’s rating has dropped by 7% since he began his second term and averaged 42% during his first term.

The poll found that 58% of Americans believe that armed troops should only be used for external threats. The finding comes amid Trump’s strategy to send the National Guard to U.S. cities in order to target crime, such as Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles.
Poll Shows Opposition to Domestic Military Involvement
In addition, 83% of respondents believe the military “should remain politically neutral and not take a side in domestic policy debates,” while 48% believe that the president should not have the authority to deploy troops into cities without approval from a state governor.
“Donald Trump is using our service members as political props and as pawns in his illegal effort to militarize America’s cities,” said Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker.
Trump’s use of troops within U.S. cities has caused widespread backlash, although he argues the measures are necessary to restore law and order.
