Trump said Putin agreed to the new meeting during a lengthy phone call between the two leaders held on Oct. 16. Trump added that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other high-level advisors will meet next week with their Russian counterparts to lay the groundwork for his summit with Putin.

An exact date for the summit between Trump and Putin has not yet been set. The U.S. president detailed his call with Putin in a social media post. The call with Putin came a day before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with Trump at the White House. Ukraine is seeking more support from the U.S. as it continues to defend itself from Russia’s attacks.

Great Progress?

On social media, Trump wrote: “President Zelenskyy and I will be meeting tomorrow, in the Oval Office, where we will discuss my conversation with President Putin, and much more… I believe great progress was made with today’s telephone conversation.”

In recent days, Trump has threatened to send Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine to ratchet up pressure on Putin to end the war. Trump and Putin met in Alaska earlier this year to discuss the war in Ukraine, but the meeting concluded with no deal being reached despite the U.S. literally rolling out a red carpet for the Russian leader.
