Trump and China President Xi will Speak ‘Very Soon’

President Trump and China President Xi Jinping will speak “very soon,” a White House official told CNBC Senior Washington Correspondent Eamon Javers. The official added that the conversation, through a phone call, will probably not take place today, although it will likely be this week.

The news comes as tensions rise between the two world powers. Last week, Trump accused China of violating the U.S.-China preliminary trade deal reached in Geneva. These violations include slow progress in removing tariff countermeasures and failing to open up the flow of critical minerals and rare earth magnets. In response, China pressured the U.S. to remove its “discriminatory restrictions” on trade.

Trump-Xi Call Expected to Occur this Week

The White House official’s comment reflects statements made by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and White House Economic Advisor Kevin Hassett over the weekend. Bessent said he is “confident” that Trump and Xi would soon speak over the phone with disagreements being “ironed out,” while Hassett said that he expects the two leaders to have a “wonderful conversation about the trade negotiations this week.”
