United flight passengers notice flames emerging from 737-900 engine, NBC says

Passengers on a United Airlines (UAL) flight to Florida from Texas noticed bright orange flames coming out of the aircraft’s engine, prompting an emergency landing, NBC News’ Tom Costello, Marlene Lenthang, and Jay Blackman report. The plane, a Boeing (BA) 737-900, safely returned to George H. Bus International Airport in Houston, the authors note. The airline described the phenomenon as an “engine issue,” the authors say.
