SoftBank (SFTBY) held talks with Intel (INTC) about making an AI chip that would compete with Nvidia (NVDA) but the plan fell apart after the U.S. chipmaker struggled to meet the Japanese group’s requirements, The Financial Times’ David Keohane, Kana Inagaki, and Michael Acton report. The talks with Intel failed in recent months, prior to the company’s announcement of major cost-cutting efforts, including thousands of layoffs, in early August, according to people familiar with the matter, adding that SoftBank is now focusing on talks with TSMC (TSM).
