A class action lawsuit against Rio Tinto has been filed in a Papua New Guinea court over the copper mine it offloaded in 2016, Rhiannon Hoyle of The Wall Street Journal reports. Mining at the Panguna copper pit on Bougainville ended in 1989 and three decades later Rio TInto handed 54% of its holding in Bougainville Copper to be distributed between Papua New Guinea and Bougainville. Lawyers representing over 3,000 residents of Bougainville filed the lawsuit against Rio Tinto and Bougainville Copper seeking compensation, alleging environmental damage and losses to villagers living in the area.
