Mobile devices that use Qualcomm’s (QCOM) Snapdragon Satellite technology will be able to send standard text messages via satellite powered by a partnership with Iridium Communications (IRDM), Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said in an interview with The Washington Post. Qualcomm and Iridium’s vision is "a little different" than others, as any phone maker that buys the former’s premium chipsets for its devices can pay a little extra to connect to the latter’s satellites, the report noted, adding that these satellite connectivity parts that will appear in a wave of new smartphones starting in the second half of 2023.
