The Federal Aviation Administration, FAA, had delayed flights at airports such as Reagan Washington National and Newark Liberty International Airport for the third consecutive day as the agency faces higher-than-normal staffing shortages, David Shepardson of Reuters reports. Nearly 3,000 flights were delayed by 5:30 PM ET on Wednesday after 10,000 delays between Monday and Tuesday. Thousands of the delays were tied to the FAA slowing flights due to air traffic controller absences across the country as the government shutdown reaches its eighth day. Publicly traded companies in the space include Alaska Air (ALK), American Airlines (AAL), Delta Air Lines (DAL), JetBlue (JBLU), Southwest (LUV), Spirit Airlines – Use FLYY (SAVE) and United Airlines (UAL).
