EU sends questions to developers over Apple cutting off web apps, FT reports

The EU’s competition regulators last week sent questions to developers in a move to determine the impact of Apple’s decision to disable “progressive web apps” in the bloc, which is viewed as a precursor to an in-depth probe, The Financial Times’ Javier Espinoza reports. Apple has said that cutting off PWAs was part of an effort to comply with the Digital Markets Act, but the move also cuts off a route to developers seeking to avoid the 30% commission fees that Apple charges for purchases made through its App Store, Espinoza writes. The European Commission stated that “We are indeed looking at the compliance packages of all gatekeepers, including Apple. In that context, we’re in particular looking into the issue of progressive web apps, and can confirm sending the requests for information to Apple and to app developers, who can provide useful information for our assessment.”
