Chinese tech companies stockpile high-end Samsung chips, Reuters reports

Baidu (BIDU), Huawei and other Chinese tech companies have been stockpiling Samsung (SSNLF) high bandwidth memory chips since early 2024 in anticipation of U.S. curbs on those chips, Reuters’ Heekyong Yang, Fanny Potkin and Karen Freifeld report, citing three sources. One source says the companies have increased their buying of the AI capable semiconductors since earlier this year, helping China account for about 30% of Samsung’s HBM chip revenue in the first half of 2024. The U.S. plans to announce an export control package this month that will impose new restrictions on shipments for China’s semiconductor industry, Reuters said last week.
