Chatbots replace Google’s search, diminishes traffic for publishers, WSJ says

Chatbots are replacing Google searches, eliminating the need to click on blue links, which has resulted in traffic publishers have relied on for years to plummet, Isabella Simonetti and Katherine Blunt of The Wall Street Journal reports. Traffic from organic search to HuffPost’s websites fell by just over half in the past three years, and by nearly that much at the Washington Post, the Journal adds, citing digital market data firm Similarweb. Similarly, organic search to Business Insider’s sites declined by 55% between April 2022 and April 2025, the Journal notes, citing Similarweb.
