Illumination and Universal’s (CMCSA) Nintendo (NTDOY) video game adaptation “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is the first movie of the year that is close of crossing the $1B mark worldwide. The film won this weekend at the domestic box office with another $87M from 4,371 theaters in its second outing, making it the biggest second weekend ever for an animated movie. Overall, “Super Mario Bros.” has earned $347.8M domestically and $330M overseas for a global total of $678M.
BOX OFFICE RUNNER-UPS: Screen Gems’ “The Pope’s Exorcist” placed number 2 with a $9.2M debut from 3,178 locations. Behind it was Lionsgate’s (LGF.B) “John Wick: Chapter 4” with another $7.9M for a domestic cume of $160.1M. Comcast subsidiary Universal’s “Renfield” placed number 4 with a $7.70M debut. Rounding out the top five, Amazon Studios (AMZN) and Ben Affleck’s “Air” grossed an estimated $7.72M.
