"Box Office Battle" is The Fly’s weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend’s box office.
Disney’s (DIS) “Avatar: The Way of Water” won the first full weekend of 2023 with an estimated $45M in its fourth outing as the movie crossed the $500M mark at the domestic box office. Overseas, the movie earned another $132.6M for an international cume of $1.19B and a global tally of $1.7B.
BOX OFFICE RUNNER-UPS: Comcast (CMCSA) subsidiary Universal’s “M3GAN” placed number 2 with a $30.2M debut. Behind it was another Universal title, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” with a projected $13.1M for a domestic total of $87.7M and $197.4M worldwide. Sony’s (SONY) “A Man Called Otto” placed fourth with an estimated $4.2M. Rounding out the top five, Disney’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” grossed another $3.4M.
