Apple (AAPL) has shifted to a less ambitious car design, shunning plans for a truly driverless car in favor of an electric vehicle with more limited features, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reports, citing people with knowledge of the project. With the latest changes, the company looks to introduce the car in 2028 at the earliest, roughly two years after a recent projection, sources told Bloomberg. Apple is now developing more basic driver-assistance features in line with current Tesla (TSLA) capabilities, according to Gurman’s sources. Apple’s secretive effort to create a car – codenamed Titan and T172 – has seen several bosses come and go along with multiple rounds of layoffs, key changes in strategy and numerous delays, the report added. Other companies in the auto production and self-driving car technology space include Tesla, Alphabet’s (GOOGL) Waymo, General Motors (GM) and its Cruise unit, and Ford (F).
