The reversal of long-standing policies held by Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOG,GOOGL), in regard to their respective app stores, is being pressured by regulators and software makers who feel the companies are too powerful in their "gatekeeper " roles with third-party software, writes Mark Gurman for Bloomberg. Software makers are intent on opening "key elements of Apple’s platforms," according to people familiar with the matter, notes Bloomberg. "As part of the changes, customers could ultimately download third-party software to their iPhones and iPads without using the company’s App Store, sidestepping Apple’s restrictions and the up-to-30% commission it imposes on payments," added Bloomberg.
