According to new details released by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, FTC, Amazon doubled its junk ads to boost profits and deleted internal communications to thwart a probe, Leah Nylen and Matt Day of Bloomberg reports. Founder and former CEO Jeff Bezos ordered executives to accept more ads, even ones labeled “defects,” according to the new version of the complaint. The FTC further alleges Amazon’s increased ads use boosted profits while harming sellers and consumers by making it more difficult for shoppers to find the product they were originally searching for.
