Amazon Prime Video will begin showing ads this month, which is expected to upend the streaming television market in the U.S., Patrick Coffee of The Wall Street Journal reports. The company is now the world’s third-largest digital ad seller. According to a recent Morgan Stanley research note, Amazon will generate roughly $5.2B in additional annual revenue through Prime Video ad sales. Still, the company faces significant challenges as it enters a market where streaming rivals with much larger footprints in traditional media have more established relationships with advertisers. Amazon must convince the world’s largest brands to spend big on Prime Video despite the alternative ways they have of reaching their customers.
