Stock Market News Today, 10/2/25 – U.S. Stock Futures Mixed Amid Government Shutdown

U.S. stock futures were mixed on Thursday morning amid the U.S. government shutdown. Futures on the Nasdaq 100 (NDX) and the S&P 500 (SPX) were up 0.36% and 0.17%, respectively, while futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) were down 0.02% at 5:25 a.m. EST on October 2.

Despite the U.S. government shutdown, all major U.S. stock indices closed higher in Wednesday’s regular trading session, on hopes that the funding stoppage would end soon without any significant economic damage. The S&P 500 rose about 0.3% to close at a record high, while the Nasdaq Composite and the Dow Jones gained 0.4% and 0.1%, respectively.

The government shutdown is expected to impact the release of key economic data, including the September nonfarm payrolls, by the Labor Department and other agencies.

Meanwhile, the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield was up, floating near 4.10% as of writing. WTI crude oil futures were trending higher, hovering near $61.94 per barrel as of the last check. Additionally, the Gold Spot price (in U.S. dollars) increased to nearly $3,877 per ounce as of last check.

Elsewhere, European stocks opened higher today, continuing Wednesday’s positive momentum. Interestingly, Stellantis (GB:0QXR) stock surged about 7% and was the top performer in the Stoxx 600, as the automaker reported a 6% rise in its Q3 U.S. sales.

Asia-Pacific Markets Traded Mixed Today

Asia-Pacific markets traded mixed on Thursday. Chinese markets remained closed due to the National Day holiday.

Interestingly, South Korea’s Kospi index rose about 3% to hit an all-time high, driven by gains in chip companies Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix as they struck key partnerships with OpenAI.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index ended 1.61% higher. Meanwhile, Japan’s Nikkei advanced 0.87% while the Topix fell 0.24%.
