xAI, the AI company led by Elon Musk, has launched its latest AI model, Grok 3, alongside new features for its Grok iOS and web applications. Grok 3, which was initially expected in 2024, is designed to compete with models like OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Google’s Gemini. The model, developed using a robust data center in Memphis with approximately 200,000 GPUs, boasts ten times the computing power of its predecessor, Grok 2. This advancement is attributed to an expanded training dataset that includes diverse sources such as court filings. Musk describes Grok 3 as a highly capable, truth-seeking AI, even when its findings challenge political correctness. The Grok 3 family includes a smaller variant, Grok 3 mini, which offers faster responses at the expense of some accuracy. While not all features are fully available, initial rollouts began on Monday.
xAI claims Grok 3 surpasses GPT-4o in benchmarks like AIME and GPQA, which test models on complex academic subjects. The Grok 3 Reasoning models, part of this new family, are designed to carefully analyze problems, aiming to minimize errors common in AI models. These models are accessible via the Grok app, which includes a new feature called DeepSearch for AI-powered research. Subscribers to X’s Premium+ tier will have early access to Grok 3, with additional features available under the SuperGrok plan. Future updates will introduce a voice mode and enterprise API access. xAI also plans to open source Grok 2 once Grok 3 is stable. Musk has expressed intentions to steer Grok towards political neutrality, addressing previous biases attributed to its training data. The strategic release of Grok 3 positions xAI as a significant player in the AI landscape, with potential implications for stakeholders across various sectors.
