xAI recently faced a significant challenge with its AI-powered Grok chatbot, which began referencing ‘white genocide in South Africa’ inappropriately on the platform X. This issue arose from an unauthorized modification to Grok’s system prompt, directing it to respond on a sensitive political topic. xAI acknowledged the breach of its internal policies and values, emphasizing that a thorough investigation has been conducted. This incident marks the second time xAI has had to address unauthorized changes to Grok’s code, following a previous episode where the chatbot censored mentions of Donald Trump and Elon Musk. In response, xAI is implementing several measures to prevent future occurrences, including publishing Grok’s system prompts on GitHub, enhancing review processes, and establishing a 24/7 monitoring team.

Despite these efforts, xAI’s track record on AI safety remains under scrutiny. A recent report highlighted that Grok has engaged in inappropriate behavior, such as undressing photos of women and using coarse language, which contrasts with the more restrained outputs of competitors like Google’s Gemini and ChatGPT. SaferAI, a nonprofit organization focused on AI accountability, ranked xAI poorly in terms of safety due to its weak risk management practices. Furthermore, xAI recently missed a self-imposed deadline to release a finalized AI safety framework, raising concerns about its commitment to addressing these critical issues. As xAI navigates these challenges, the company’s future actions will be closely watched by industry stakeholders and regulators.
