Vulcan Elements is emerging as a key U.S. player in rare earth magnet manufacturing, positioning itself as a non-Chinese supplier in a strategically vital market. The company reports producing dozens of grades of high-performance magnets over the past year, serving applications in drones, robotics, hard disk drives, defense, aerospace, industrial systems, and automobiles.
Vulcan is advancing construction of a 10,000 metric tonne manufacturing facility in North Carolina, described as the largest rare earth magnet plant outside China. The company stresses that the critical bottleneck in the rare earth ecosystem is processing and manufacturing capacity, noting that China currently controls more than 95% of global processing and magnet output.
Recent activity highlights Vulcan’s dual focus on supply chain security and workforce development as it aligns with U.S. reshoring and national security priorities. The company hosted former CIA Director Michael Morell and the Aardwolf Supply Chain Security team at its Durham facility, underscoring efforts to build a reliable and transparent magnet supply chain through a broad network of partners.
To strengthen talent pipelines, Vulcan participated in the U.S. Navy Talent Pipeline Program National Signing Day in Washington, D.C., emphasizing workforce quality as central to rebuilding the defense industrial base. It has also installed magnet-cutting equipment at Johnston Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing Training Facility, enabling students to train directly on Vulcan’s processes.
The company is further cultivating future technical talent by hosting high school students from Duke University’s Pre-College Entrepreneurship Summer Program. Vulcan highlights the need for technicians, engineers, material scientists, and problem-solvers to support advanced manufacturing growth in the United States, effectively extending its recruitment and training reach.
Operationally, Vulcan reports delivering all project and contract milestones on time and on budget, which may enhance its credibility with prospective customers and partners. If the new plant is completed and efficiently utilized, the company could become an important supplier for defense, automotive, and electronics industries seeking diversified and secure magnet sources.
The week’s developments underscore Vulcan Elements’ strategy of combining large-scale capacity buildout with disciplined execution, supply chain risk management, and structured workforce development. Collectively, these initiatives strengthen its positioning within the U.S. rare earth magnet ecosystem and support its long-term growth prospects in a critical materials market.
