SpaceX is set to conduct its sixth test flight of the Starship rocket on November 18, marking another significant milestone in its development of the largest rocket ever built. This upcoming test follows a successful mission last month, which notably included the first-ever return of the Super Heavy booster to the launch site, where it was caught mid-air by the launch tower’s ‘chopstick’ arms. The Federal Aviation Administration’s prior approval of both the fifth and sixth flights has allowed SpaceX to maintain a high flight cadence, a marked improvement from previous delays due to regulatory approvals.
The objectives for this test remain consistent with prior missions, focusing on the booster recovery and a precise splashdown of the Starship upper stage. SpaceX aims to further test the heat shield and refine reentry maneuvers, essential steps towards achieving full reusability of the system. Engineers have introduced several upgrades, including enhanced redundancy in the booster propulsion system and updated software controls. A critical aspect of this test will be the attempt to relight one of the Ship’s Raptor engines in orbit, a capability crucial for reusing the upper stage. Additional tests include evaluating new thermal protection materials and experimenting with a higher angle of attack during descent to gather data on future landing profiles. These efforts are expected to lead to significant upgrades starting with flight seven, such as redesigned flaps and larger propellant tanks.
