SpaceX recently conducted its seventh test flight of the Starship rocket system, successfully launching the Super Heavy booster and catching it for the second time. However, the mission encountered a significant setback when the upper stage of the Starship was lost after the company lost contact approximately eight and a half minutes into the flight. The spacecraft had separated from the booster and initiated its own rocket engines to reach orbit, but some engines appeared to malfunction, leading to a telemetry link failure. SpaceX later confirmed an ‘anomaly’ during the ascent burn in space, which resulted in the loss of the ship.
In response to the incident, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk indicated that an ‘oxygen/fuel leak’ might have caused excessive pressure within the Starship’s cavity. To address this, SpaceX plans to enhance leak detection, implement a fire suppression system, and increase venting areas to mitigate pressure buildup. Despite the setback, the mission was intended to be a pivotal moment for SpaceX, as it included the deployment of 10 dummy Starlink satellites and marked the beginning of a transformative year for the Starship program. The spacecraft featured significant upgrades, including a redesigned avionics system, more powerful flight computers, and enhanced communication capabilities. SpaceX is also working towards the capability to catch the Starship along with the booster, testing new heat tiles and structural components during this flight. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that flights in the area were adjusted due to debris sightings, underscoring the broader implications of the test flight’s outcome.
