SpaceX is advancing its satellite internet service, Starlink, by acquiring an additional $2.6 billion in wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar. This transaction builds on a previous $17 billion deal announced in September, underscoring SpaceX’s commitment to expanding its global internet service. The newly acquired spectrum will bolster Starlink’s ‘direct to cell’ initiative, initially allowing T-Mobile customers to access satellite-based 5G internet, a significant step in broadening Starlink’s market presence.
The acquisition coincides with SpaceX’s announcement of surpassing 8 million global customers, a testament to Starlink’s growing influence. Recent partnerships, such as the agreement with International Airlines Group, will see Starlink’s inflight internet service installed on over 500 aircraft, including those operated by British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus, starting in 2026. This expansion into the aviation sector follows successful integrations with airlines like Hawaiian Airlines, United Airlines, and Qatar Airways. These strategic moves not only enhance Starlink’s service offerings but also position SpaceX as a formidable player in the satellite internet market, further solidifying its competitive edge and financial prospects.
