SpaceX has identified propellant leaks as the primary cause of last month’s Starship explosion, a setback the company has since addressed with several technical adjustments. These include modifications to the fuel lines, adjustments to propellant temperatures, and the addition of new vents and a purge system to enhance the robustness of the rocket’s aft section. The company is now poised for an eighth test flight, potentially as soon as Friday, pending clearance from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA is currently conducting a ‘mishap investigation’ into the incident, and SpaceX is awaiting either the closure of this investigation or special authorization to proceed with the flight.
This marks the first instance of SpaceX undergoing a mishap investigation while CEO Elon Musk is involved in U.S. government operations, particularly with his Department of Government Efficiency influencing changes at the FAA. The January test initially proceeded smoothly, with the Super Heavy booster and launch tower performing as expected. However, issues arose when Starship’s engines ignited, leading to a series of flashes and fires due to unexpected vibrations causing stress on the propulsion system. The resulting explosion, which was visually striking over the Turks and Caicos, necessitated flight diversions by the FAA. SpaceX maintains that all debris landed within a pre-planned safe zone, although reports of debris washing ashore have surfaced. The company is focused on resolving these issues to ensure the success of future missions.
