Shield AI has achieved a significant milestone by successfully conducting an autonomous flight of the BQM-177A target drone using its Hivemind AI-enabled autonomy software. This test, conducted in August at Naval Air Station Point Mugu, marks a crucial step towards the U.S. Navy’s first beyond-visual-range autonomy mission on a fast-moving platform. The demonstration was part of the Experimental Platform for Intelligent Combat (EPIC) project, which aims to advance manned-unmanned teaming capabilities. Shield AI’s role as the lead systems integrator and mission autonomy provider involved managing platform modification, payload integration, and technical coordination with industry and government stakeholders.

The test showcased the successful integration of Hivemind with Kratos’ Advanced Vehicle Control Laws and demonstrated the system’s ability to autonomously control the BQM-177A. This achievement underscores Shield AI’s capability to rapidly integrate autonomy onto new platforms, reinforcing its position as a reliable partner in the development of scalable and interoperable autonomy solutions. The BQM-177A, originally designed as a high-performance aerial target, served as a low-cost research platform, providing valuable insights for Navy Collaborative Combat Aircraft concepts. The success of this test paves the way for a final demonstration later this year, reflecting steady progress towards operational autonomy on tactically relevant air platforms. Shield AI’s efforts align with the Department of Defense’s Autonomy Government Reference Architecture framework, enhancing interoperability across autonomous military platforms. This development positions Shield AI as a key player in the future of autonomous military operations.
